Gender differences in functional outcome of elderly hip fracture patients.
The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether gender might affect functional outcome of hip fractured patients undergoing in-hospital rehabilitation. ⋯ The findings suggest that absolute discharge FIM scores of females are higher, compared with male patients. After adjusting for possible covariates, female gender still emerged as an independent predictor for higher FIM at discharge, suggesting that male gender should be considered as adversely affecting rehabilitation outcome of hip fracture male patients.

Frailty as a predictor of all-cause mortality in older men and women.
To investigate the modifying effect of sex on the association between frailty and all-cause mortality, and to determine the effects of changes in frailty status on mortality. ⋯ Frailty is strongly associated with higher mortality, especially among women. Among men, the association was explained by baseline functional capacity, comorbidity and lifestyle factors. Changes in frailty status should also be taken into consideration when planning geriatric care, as such changes could indicate a more rapid decline in health.

Changes in the physical functions of pre-frail elderly women after participation in a 1-year preventative exercise program.
The present study clarifies the effects of participation in a preventative health classroom program (exercise program) for 1 year on the physical functions of pre-frail elderly individuals in comparison with healthy elderly individuals. ⋯ Improvements in the TUG and 5-m walking time tests were found in the pre-frail elderly group after the 1-year exercise program. Their results in the TUG test might be greater than those among the healthy elderly individuals.

Relationship between small cerebral white matter lesions and cognitive function in patients with Alzheimer's disease and amnestic mild cognitive impairment.
The main purpose of the present study was to investigate the influence of small cerebral white matter lesions on cognitive functions, and its difference by clinical stage. ⋯ The results suggested the involvement of periventricular small white matter lesions on impairment in verbal fluency, and such influence might be different depending on an individual's clinical stage.

Experience of care home residents with Parkinson's disease: Reason for admission and service use.
The care needs of people with Parkinson's disease (PD) are poorly understood. We aimed to investigate the factors that precipitate entry to institutional care, and on-going care needs once in care, within a representative cohort of community-dwelling people with PD. ⋯ Hospital attendances and admissions were relatively common, even after institutional care home placement. Events precipitating admission, such as falls, might be preventable. PD nurse specialists could be an effective way to help train staff in homes where someone is known to have PD.
