Impact of gender and body mass index on surgical outcomes following gastrectomy: an Asia-Pacific perspective.
Although surgeons may expect difficulties in performing gastrectomy on patients with high body mass index (BMI), it is not always the case, especially regarding patient gender. The aim of this study was to evaluate gender as a predictive factor of surgical outcomes related to obesity, as defined by the World Health Organization for the Asia-Pacific region. ⋯ Disparity in surgical outcomes between male and female patients does exist, particularly in patients with high BMI. Gender adjustment of BMI must be performed when predicting surgical outcomes.

Pure alumina bearings with cementless stems versus sandwich bearings with cemented stems in total hip arthroplasty.
Ceramic bearing surfaces have been introduced to prevent osteolysis after total hip arthroplasty (THA), but little is known about the difference in clinical and radiological results between pure alumina and sandwich alumina bearings. The purpose of this study was to analyze the results obtained with third-generation alumina-on-alumina THA with two different designs both in liner and femoral stem fixation after a minimum follow-up of 4.2 years. ⋯ The sandwich design of the acetabular bearings can not reduce the migration rate in ceramic bearings but increase the liner fracture rate compared to pure ceramic liners. The high loosening rate in fluted and taped designed cemented stems with sandwich liners warrant caution to their use.

Meta AnalysisEfficacy and safety of micafungin for invasive candida infections: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
Invasive fungal infections such as candidiasis and mold infections cause significant morbidity and mortality in seriously ill patients. Micafungin is an echinocandin antifungal agent with potent activity against most species of Candida and Aspergillus. We did this meta-analysis to clarify whether micafungin offers superior efficacy and safety compared with other antifungal agent for treating infections associated with invasive candidiasis. ⋯ Micafungin has a good safety and tolerability profile, with an efficacy at least comparable to the other antifungal agents. Micafungin offers advantages over other agents for antifungal prophylaxis. Micafungin offers an appropriate alternative for antifungal prophylaxis rather than the treatment of invasive candida infections.

Associations of plasma homocysteine and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels with arterial stiffness in Chinese population: a community-based study.
Arterial stiffness increases with age and is also associated with traditional cardiovascular risk factors. Little is known about the relations of homocysteine and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) to arterial stiffness in the Chinese community. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association of plasma homocysteine and hs-CRP levels with arterial stiffness in a community-based cohort. ⋯ In the Chinese population, plasma homocysteine levels are associated with alterations of aortic stiffness, whereas plasma levels of hs-CRP are not independently related to artery stiffening.

Association of immunophenotypic characterization of peripheral lymphocytes with different clinical phenotypes of tuberculosis in Chinese Han children.
Very few researchers have studied the changes in peripheral lymphocyte patterns in adult tuberculosis (TB) and even less researches have been conducted in pediatric TB. In this study, we obtained blood samples from 114 Chinese pediatric TB patients and 116 matched controls to study the association of phenotypic subsets of peripheral lymphocytes with different clinical phenotypes of TB. ⋯ This study demonstrates changes in the lymhocyte distribution in children suffering from different clinical phenotypes of TB; such as primary pulmonary TB, and TB meningitis. These patterns may have significance in understanding the pathogenesis and prognostic markers of the disease, and for developing immunomodulatory modalities of therapy.
