Stress Management Training Improves Overall Performance during Critical Simulated Situations.
High-fidelity simulation improves participant learning through immersive participation in a stressful situation. Stress management training might help participants to improve performance. The hypothesis of this work was that Tactics to Optimize the Potential, a stress management program, could improve resident performance during simulation. ⋯ Residents coping with simulated critical situations who have been trained with Tactics to Optimize the Potential showed better overall performance and a decrease in stress level during high-fidelity simulation. The benefits of this stress management training may be explored in actual clinical settings, where a 5-min Tactics to Optimize the Potential reactivation is feasible prior to delivering a specific intervention.

As more older adults undergo surgery, it is critical to understand the long-term effects of surgery on brain health, particularly in relation to the development of Alzheimer's disease. This study examined the association of surgical hospitalization with subsequent brain β-amyloid deposition in nondemented older adults. ⋯ The results do not support an association between surgical hospitalization and elevated brain amyloid.

Frailty and cognitive impairment are associated with postoperative delirium, but are rarely assessed preoperatively. The study was designed to test the hypothesis that preoperative screening for frailty or cognitive impairment identifies patients at risk for postoperative delirium (primary outcome). ⋯ Screening for frailty and cognitive impairment preoperatively using the FRAIL scale and the Animal Verbal Fluency test in older elective spine surgery patients identifies those at high risk for the development of postoperative delirium.
