Health-care-associated infections characterised by antibiotic drug resistance are a global medical challenge that claims billions of dollars of health-care expenditure. Bacterial adhesion and subsequent formation of biofilms on catheters and tubes are the primary mechanisms through which these infections are initiated and propagated. We tested the efficacy and safety for clinical treatment of a coating based on natural protein, in which immunogenicity was eliminated through physical plasticising, applied to the surfaces of medical devices to inhibit bacterial adhesion. ⋯ National Basic Research Program of China (2014CB964603, 2012CB966300), National Natural Science Foundation of China (81271958), Center for Innovation Technology (MF13-005-LS), William H Goodwin Endowment.

By 2014, about 253 million Chinese migrants had left their rural hometowns and were working in cities. The effect of migration on health is unclear, since it is affected by changes in environments and behaviours over the course of migration. Furthermore, previous studies have not thoroughly considered the "healthy migrant hypothesis" (that is, healthy people are more conducive to migrate). This paper strives to explore the potential mechanisms of migration and health over two successive years to provide a useful reference point for health policy targeted at migrants. ⋯ None.

Despite well-established benefits of exercise in the management of metabolic syndrome, evidence to support exercise adherence after program completion is lacking. We used a smartphone-based exercise adherence intervention (Virtual Trainer; Ex-VT) for adults with metabolic syndrome in Hong Kong, China. The objectives were to measure the feasibility, potential effectiveness, and implementation of Ex-VT in sustaining prescribed exercise practice for risk reduction in metabolic syndrome. ⋯ Departmental Research Fund, Cardiac and Acute Care Research Theme Group, The Nethersole School of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China (CV1502).
