Everyday creativity is the basic ability of human survival and penetrates every aspect of life. Nevertheless, the neural mechanisms underlying everyday creativity was largely unexplored. In this study, seventy-five participants completed the creative behaviour inventory, a tool for assessing creative behaviour in daily life. ⋯ Interestingly, individual differences in everyday creativity were associated with distinct patterns of EEG alpha activity. Specifically, individuals with higher everyday creativity had increased alpha power in the frontal cortex, and increased changes in coherence in frontal-temporal regions of the right hemisphere while performing the AUT. It might indicate that individuals with higher everyday creativity had an enhanced ability to focus on internal information processing and control bottom-up stimuli, as well as better selection of novel semantic information when performing creative ideation tasks.

Half a century since their discovery by Llinás and colleagues, dendritic spikes have been observed in various neurons in different brain regions, from the neocortex and cerebellum to the basal ganglia. Dendrites exhibit a terrifically diverse but stereotypical repertoire of spikes, sometimes specific to subregions of the dendrite. ⋯ This article aims to survey the full range of dendritic spikes found in excitatory and inhibitory neurons, compare themin vivoversusin vitro, and discuss new studies describing dendritic spikes in the human cortex. We focus on neocortical and hippocampal neurons and present a roadmap to identify and understand the broader role of dendritic spikes in single-cell computation.

In this paper, we discuss the nonlinear computational power provided by dendrites in biological and artificial neurons. We start by briefly presenting biological evidence about the type of dendritic nonlinearities, respective plasticity rules and their effect on biological learning as assessed by computational models. ⋯ The works are categorized according to the three primary methods of plasticity used-structural plasticity, weight plasticity, or plasticity of synaptic delays. Finally, we show the recent trend of confluence between concepts of deep learning and dendritic computations and highlight some future research directions.

Silent myocardial infarction (MI) is critical for clinical practice with increasing risk for women and the cause remains a medical mystery. Upon the discovery of female-specific Ah-type baroreceptor neurons (BRNs), we hypothesize that glutamate mediates depressor response through afferent-specific expression of particular glutamate receptors (mGluRs) leading descending inhibition of cardiac nociception. In vivo, tail-flick reflex and electromyography were assessed to evaluate glutamate-mediated blood pressure regulation, peripheral and cardiac nociception. ⋯ Glutamate in serum, NG and nucleus tractus solitary (NTS) was raised significantly in the model rats of both sexes vs. sham-controls. Female-specific expression of mGluR7 in the baroreflex afferent pathway, especially higher expression in Ah-type BRNs, contributes significantly to cardiac analgesia, which may explain that the pathogenesis of silent MI occurs mainly in female patients. Therefore, higher expression of mGluR7 in female-specific subpopulation of Ah-type BRNs plays a critical role in cardiac analgesia and peripheral nociception.

Itch (pruritus) is a common cutaneous symptom widely associated with many skin complaints, and chronic itch can be a severe clinical problem. The onset and perpetuation of itch are linked to cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-31, IL-4, IL-13, IL-33, thymic stromal lymphopoietin, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and chemokines, such as chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 2 and C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 10. This review highlights research that has attempted to determine the attributes of various cytokines and chemokines concerning the development and modulation of itch. Through such research, clinical approaches targeting cytokines and/or chemokines may arise, which may further the development of itch therapeutics.
