Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyThe pediatric residency training on tobacco project: four-year resident outcome findings.
To evaluate the efficacy of a special program for training pediatric residents to address tobacco. ⋯ The special training program, with Solutions for Smoking as its centerpiece, was found to be effective for training pediatric residents to address tobacco, and it may serve as a model for pediatric residency training programs. Ways of improving the program are discussed.

Multicenter StudyTesting anonymous link procedures for follow-up of adolescents in a school-based trial: the EU-DAP pilot study.
To study the feasibility of an anonymous coding procedure linking longitudinal information in a multi-center trial of substance abuse prevention among adolescents. ⋯ Self-generation of anonymous codes is a feasible, but not a very efficient procedure to link longitudinal data among adolescents. Easy derivation and iterative matching procedures are crucial for achieving high efficiency of this type of anonymous linkage.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Clinical TrialA cluster randomized controlled trial of school-based prevention of tobacco, alcohol and drug use: the EU-Dap design and study population.
The empirical evidence of effectiveness of many school-based programs against substance abuse is rather weak. The EU-Dap study is a multicenter cluster randomized community trial (CRCT) designed to evaluate such a program. This paper presents study design and baseline characteristics of the study population. ⋯ EU-Dap is the first European multicenter randomized study to evaluate the effectiveness of a school program targeting tobacco, alcohol and drug use. The baseline assessment showed high prevalence and wide geographical variations of substance use.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study Clinical TrialThe pediatric resident training on tobacco project: baseline findings from the Parent/Guardian Tobacco Survey.
Pediatricians have an important and unique role to play in the anti-tobacco arena. They may prevent relapse to smoking in women who stopped smoking during pregnancy, encourage parents to protect infants and young children from environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), prevent the onset of smoking in children and adolescents, and help patients and parents who smoke or use other forms of tobacco to quit. Unfortunately, few pediatricians intervene on tobacco use or ETS, and few pediatric residency training programs prepare residents to address tobacco. The Pediatric Residency Training on Tobacco Project is a 4-year randomized prospective study of the effectiveness of training pediatric residents to intervene on tobacco in patients and parents. In this paper, we present findings from the Baseline Parent/Guardian Tobacco Survey. ⋯ Parents of children brought to Continuity Clinic may benefit from advice and assistance on quitting cigarette smoking and protecting their children from ETS. While pediatric residents offer advice and encouragement, few provide the assistance parents require. These findings underscore the importance of training pediatric residents to address tobacco with the parents/guardians of the patients they serve.

Multicenter Study Comparative StudyCancer preventive screening: a cross-border comparison of United States and Canadian Chinese women.
To compare screening mammography and Pap testing among Chinese women in Seattle, Washington to Vancouver, and British Columbia. ⋯ Despite universal health care coverage and baseline characteristics typically associated with greater utilization of preventive screening services, Chinese women in Vancouver did not have higher rates of screening mammography and Pap testing compared to Chinese women in Seattle.
