Nurses' assessment of postoperative pain: can it be an alternative to patients' self-reports?
This study was designed to evaluate whether the nurses' assessment of postoperative pain can be an alternative to patients' self-reporting. We examined 187 patients receiving postoperative intravenous patient-controlled analgesia. The nurses assessed the patients' pain with three pain indices (therapeutic efficacy, pain intensity, and facial pain expression) 8 hr after operation. ⋯ The pain intensity assessed with a simple verbal descriptor scale therefore is believed to be an effective alternative to the patients' self-reports of postoperative pain at rest. However, it mirrored the patients' self-reports during movement less reliably. Therapeutic efficacy and facial pain expression indices were not effective alternatives to patients' self-reporting.

The flow rate of the elastomeric balloon infusor is influenced by the internal pressure of the infusor.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the flow rate of elastomeric balloon infusor composed of rubber or silicone materials. Two models were studied: the Baxter Twoday Infusor and Advance Silicone Infusor. Each infusion device has a preset flow rate of 2 mL/hr. ⋯ Both devices initially infused at a relatively high rate, followed by a somewhat steady flow rate. The flow rate distinctly increased in the small residual volume. The flow rate of the balloon infusor used in this study was not sustained uniformly during the entire delivery period and was in proportion to the internal pressure of the infusor regardless of the materials.

ReviewChemistry and cancer preventing activities of ginseng saponins and some related triterpenoid compounds.
More than 25 dammarane-type tetracyclic triterpenoid saponins have been isolated from ginseng, the root and rhizome of Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer (Araliaceae). ⋯ Recently, ginsenoside Rg-3 was produced as an anti-angiogenic anti-cancer drug in China. The aforementioned reports suggest that less glycosylated protopanaxadiol derivatives are effective in cancer prevention. Apart from Ginseng tetracyclic triterpenoid saponins, some oleanane-type pentacyclic triterpenoid compounds showed the anti-carcinogenic activity in the two-stage anti-cancer-promotion experiments in vitro and in vivo.

Case ReportsVestibular schwannoma with malignant transformation: a case report.
We describe a rare case of malignant transformation in a vestibular schwannoma in a 33-yr-old woman. She presented herself with headache, tinnitus, and hearing loss and underwent posterior fossa explorations three times during the short period of 3 months. The clinicopathological features of the original tumor were typical of benign vestibular schwannoma. ⋯ Repeat magnetic resonance imaging performed a month after the second surgery unexpectedly showed definite tumor enlargement. She remained clinically stable following the third debulking of the tumor and adjuvant radiotherapy. We propose that this recurrent tumor represent malignant transformation from a benign vestibular schwannoma which was an unusual occurrence in a patient without neurofibromatosis.

For many many thousand years, mankind has been using various plants as nutrient, beverage, cosmetics, dye and medicine to maintain health and to improve quality of life. In Aisa, particularly, Panax ginseng C. A. ⋯ Even in the Western world, where there are greatly advanced research facilities and highly qualified man-power available, and are regarded to be capable of conquering any hard-to-cure ailments, many peoples has recently been reported to use herbal medicine, particularly ginseng. In the present compilation of papers, many scientists contributed papers pertaining to "Chemopreventive effects of ginseng". In order to facilitate the readers understand easier and better, I catalogued this collection as follows: The spiritual nature of ginseng in the Far East, the history of ginseng, nomenclature and geographical distribution of ginseng, and type of ginseng products.
