The A1 allele of the TaqIA polymorphism in the dopamine D2 receptor gene (rs1800497) has been associated with obesity. However, the effect of the polymorphism on the success in weight loss and/or weight maintenance during weight-loss programs has not been evaluated thus far. ⋯ In this program, younger A1⁺ participants exhibited problems in maintaining weight loss during a weight-loss program.

Arginine (Arg) is known to possess numerous useful physiological properties and immunomodulatory effects. Th17 cells are a unique T-helper cell lineage. Regulation of Th17 cells plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory disorders. This study investigated the effect of Arg on the exogenous advanced glycosylation end product (AGE)-induced Th17-mediated immune response. ⋯ These results suggest that in a condition of exogenous AGE administration, supplemental dietary Arg resulted in a more pronounced IL-23/IL-17 immune response, possibly by increasing NO secretion.

Caffeine is a constituent of many non-alcoholic beverages. Pharmacological actions of caffeine include the antagonism of adenosine receptors and the inhibition of phosphodiesterase activity. The A₁ adenosine receptors present on adipocytes are involved in the control of fatty acid uptake and lipolysis. In this study, the effects of caffeine were characterized in a diet-induced metabolic syndrome in rats. ⋯ Decreased total body fat, concurrent with increased plasma lipid concentrations, reflects the lipolytic effects of caffeine in adipocytes, likely owing to the caffeine antagonism of A₁ adenosine receptors on adipocytes.

Recent studies have suggested that c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) plays an important role in the formation of abdominal aortic aneurysms, and that direct blockade of JNK by specific inhibitors can effectively prevent the progression of aortic aneurysms. A study has demonstrated that curcumin can suppress the development of experimental abdominal aortic aneurysms by inhibiting inflammation. We sought to investigate whether curcumin could inhibit JNK pathways and apoptosis in thoracic aortic aneurysms. ⋯ The present study indicates that the beneficial effect of curcumin on degenerative aortic aneurysms is related to the inhibition of JNK and apoptosis in the walls of thoracic aortic aneurysms.
