Muscle relaxation does not influence venous oxygen saturation during cardiopulmonary bypass.
To examine whether the omission of neuromuscular blocking drugs during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is associated with increased anesthetic requirements, higher frequency of intraoperative movements, and lower venous oxygen saturation (SvO(2)). ⋯ Omitting the continuous administration of neuromuscular blocking drugs during CPB did not increase anesthetic requirements. No intraoperative movements occurred, nor was there decreased SvO(2).

Effect of low tidal volume ventilation on atelectasis in patients during general anesthesia: a computed tomographic scan.
To determine whether low tidal ventilation in patients without lung injury results in an increase in the amount of atelectasis and a further impairment of gas exchange during general anesthesia. ⋯ Ventilation using low V(T)s does not cause more pulmonary collapse than mechanical ventilation using standard V(T)s.

The addition of a regional block team to the orthopedic operating rooms does not improve anesthesia-controlled times and turnover time in the setting of long turnover times.
To determine whether a regional block team with a dedicated space for performance of regional anesthetics would decrease turnover time and shorten the working day in a busy orthopedic practice with lengthy turnover times. ⋯ A regional block team in this environment does not reduce anesthesia-controlled times and turnover times in an orthopedic OR suite with long turnover times, and it would be virtually impossible to recover the associated extra cost. The surgeons' perspective of turnover time is inaccurate.

Preadministration of flurbiprofen suppresses prostaglandin production and postoperative pain in orthopedic patients undergoing tourniquet inflation.
To evaluate the effect of preadministration of flurbiprofen on the plasma concentrations of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and postoperative pain. ⋯ Preadministration of flurbiprofen suppresses the local production of PGE2 during tourniquet ischemia, resulting in reduced early postoperative pain in patients undergoing knee surgery.
