A multicenter study of the analgesic effects of epidural chloroprocaine after lower limb orthopedic surgery.
To investigate the effects and optimal concentration of chloroprocaine for epidural analgesia after lower limb orthopedic surgery. ⋯ Epidural 1.2% chloroprocaine with 0.4μg/mL fentanyl could generate proper analgesic effects with little influence on mobility in patients undergoing lower limb orthopedic surgery. In addition, it could generate a good sense and movement separation, facilitating the early functional training.

Effect of endovenous lidocaine on analgesia and serum cytokines: double-blinded and randomized trial.
This trial aimed to compare postoperative analgesia, opioid consumption, duration of ileus and hospital stay, and cytokine levels in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomies who received intravenous lidocaine in comparison with a control group. ⋯ Intravenous lidocaine was not able to reduce postoperative pain, opioid consumption, and duration of ileus or length of hospital stay. However, its anti-inflammatory effect was noticeable.

Variability in anesthesiologists' approach to the preoperative management of asthmatic children.
No consensus guidelines exist for the preoperative treatment of asthmatic children referred for elective surgery. We investigated the attitude of pediatric anesthesiologists to this issue. ⋯ A wide variability exists in pediatric anesthesiologists' approach to the preoperative management of asthmatic children for most common case scenarios. This is probably explained by the heterogeneity of asthma, the type of surgery, the lack of guidelines, and the paucity of data. Similarities as well as differences exist between pediatric anesthesiologists and pulmonologists. Further studies and implementation of consensus guidelines are needed.

Active perioperative patient warming using a self-warming blanket (BARRIER EasyWarm) is superior to passive thermal insulation: a multinational, multicenter, randomized trial.
Incidence of inadvertent perioperative hypothermia is still high; therefore, present guidelines advocate "prewarming" for its prevention. Prewarming means preoperative patient skin warming, which minimizes redistribution hypothermia caused by induction of anesthesia. In this study, we compared the new self-warming BARRIER EasyWarm blanket with passive thermal insulation regarding mean perioperative patient core body temperature. ⋯ Perioperative use of the new self-warming blanket improves mean perioperative core body temperature, reduces the incidence of inadvertent perioperative hypothermia, and improves patients' thermal comfort during elective adult surgery.

Respiratory volume monitoring in an obese surgical population and the prediction of postoperative respiratory depression by the STOP-bang OSA risk score.
To evaluate use of a respiratory volume monitor (RVM; ExSpiron, Respiratory Motion, Inc., Waltham, MA, USA) that provides minute ventilation (MV), tidal volume (TV) and respiratory rate (RR) measurements in obese surgical patients, hitherto undescribed. ⋯ There was excellent correlation and accuracy between the RVM and ventilator volumes in obese surgical patients. A considerable number of patients exhibited PORD and POA in the PACU. The STOP-Bang risk scores correlated poorly with PORD and POA which suggests that obese surgical patients remain at risk for early post-operative respiratory events irrespective of the STOP-Bang score.
