To investigate the changes of serum cystatin C (Cys-C), beta 2-microglobulin (β2-MG), urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), and alpha 1-microglobulin (α1-MG) in asphyxiated neonates, and to evaluate the value of combined detection of multiple biomarkers in the early diagnosis of acute kidney injury (AKI) in asphyxiated neonates. ⋯ Serum Cys-C, β2-MG, urine NGAL, and α1-MG are early specific indicators for the diagnosis of renal injury after neonatal asphyxia. Combined detection of these parameters could aid clinical evaluation of renal injury in asphyxiated neonates.

The aim of this systematic review was to consolidate studies to determine whether root cause analysis (RCA) is an adequate method to decrease recurrence of avoidable adverse events (AAEs). ⋯ RCA is a useful tool for the identification of the remote and immediate causes of safety incidents, but not for implementing effective measures to prevent their recurrence.

A widely used chemical-mechanical method of gingival retraction can cause gingival tissue damage. The aim of this study was to test the influence of the chemical-mechanical gingival retraction procedures on the gingival bleeding index (GBI) and the salivary concentration of monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1) as an indicator of inflammatory changes in the gingiva. ⋯ Higher values of the investigated parameters were observed in the group of subjects with prepared teeth, and clinical changes were more pronounced after the use of ferric sulfate.

Achilles tendon lengthening (ATL) is one of the most commonly performed procedures in paediatric orthopaedic surgery. An appropriate adjustment of the amount of ATL is crucial to avoid insufficient or excessive lengthening. However, there is currently no effective method to preoperatively calculate the tendon length needed for equinus deformity correction. Thus, in this study we evaluated the accuracy of a calculation using a mathematical model based on the law of cosines. ⋯ The required dimension of ATL can be calculated preoperatively using the mathematical formula presented here. The advantages of this approach are that it allows accurate tendon lengthening and reduces the size of the surgical incision.

Helicobacter pyloriis responsible for a wide spectrum of diseases. Due to ease of use and access, the standard triple therapy is being used as first-line eradication in many areas. Intestinal metaplasia (IM) is a precancerous lesion that requires eradication therapy. Our aim is to investigate the effect of IM on the standard triple therapy success in H. pylori-positive patients. ⋯ The severity of chronic inflammation is the most effective Sydney criteria for success of eradication, while the presence on IM does not have any effect.
