Randomized Controlled TrialEfficacy of preoperative single dose antibiotic in patients undergoing mesh repair for inguinal hernia.
Inguinal hernia is the commonest type of external hernias. Lichtenstein mesh repair is the most favoured technique of inguinal hernia repair nowadays. It is tension free repair of weakened inguinal wall using polypropylene mesh. The present study was conducted to determine the efficacy of single dose antibiotic with placebo on patients undergoing inguinal hernia mesh repair. ⋯ Antibiotic prophylaxis is a preferred option for mesh plasty.

Randomized Controlled TrialRole of prophylactic antibiotics in low risk elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy: is there a need?
Elective cholecystectomy for symptomatic gall stone disease carries low risk of postoperative infective complications. Yet the routine use of prophylactic antibiotic is in vogue in many centres. The aim of this study was to find out the efficacy of antibiotic prophylaxis in preventing postoperative infective complications in low risk elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy patients. ⋯ In low risk patients antibiotic prophylaxis does not seem to affect the incidence of postoperative infective complications in elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The use of prophylactic antibiotics should be reserved for high risk patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Randomized Controlled TrialOral clonidine for attenuation of haemodynamic response to laryngoscopy and endotracheal intubation in known hypertensive patients.
Sympathetic response associated with laryngoscopy and endotracheal intubation is recognised as a potential cause for a number of complications especially in hypertensive patients. Various methods have been used to attenuate these haemodynamic responses; however most of the studies are in normotensive patients. The aim of our study was to compare the effect of oral clonidine and 1/V fentanyl with oral placebo and I/V fentanyl in attenuating the haemodynamic responses to laryngoscopy and intubation in known hypertensive patients. ⋯ Clonidine, under the present study design attenuates the haemodynamic response to laryngoscopy and endotracheal intubation in known hypertensive patients.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyComparison of manual vacuum aspiration, and dilatation and curettage in the treatment of early pregnancy failure.
To compare the efficacy, safety and cost effectiveness of Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA) with dilatation and curettage (DNC) in the management of early pregnancy failure. ⋯ MVA is as effective as conventional dilatation and curettage for treatment of early pregnancy failure while it causes less blood loss, is less time consuming, requires a shorter hospital stay and thus costs less. It does not require general anaesthesia and complication rate is less than dilatation and curettage.

Randomized Controlled TrialClosure of elective abdominal incisions with monofilament, non-absorbable suture material versus polyfilament absorbable suture material.
Closure of abdominal incisions with different suture materials has been a matter of great controversy. Polypropylene and Polylactide with Polyglycolide are among the commonest suture materials used for closure of abdominal incisions. Objectives of this study were to assess optimal suture material used for closure of elective abdominal incisions and to see complications associated with these suture materials. ⋯ Polylactide is an optimal suture material in closure of elective abdominal incisions.
