We determined the prevalence rate of classes A, B and D β-lactamases among extended-spectrum cephalosporin (ESC)-non-susceptible Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolates from burned patients. ⋯ VEB-1 and OXA-10 are the predominant ESBL genes and bla(VIM) is the dominate MBL gene in ESC-non-sensitive P. aeruginosa isolates in Saudi Arabia. VEB, OXA-10 and GES ESBLs have not been reported previously in Saudi Arabia and GES has not been reported previously in Middle East and North Africa.

Burns are common injuries that cause problems to societies throughout the world. In order to reduce the cost of burn treatment in children, it is extremely important to determine the burn epidemiology and the cost of medicines used in burn treatment. The present study used a retrospective design, with data collected from medical records of 140 paediatric patients admitted to a burn centre between 1 January 2009 and 31 December 2009. ⋯ In this study, the medication cost for burn patients was found to be relatively high, with antibiotics comprising the vast majority of medication expenditure. Most paediatric burns are preventable, so it is vital to educate families about potential household hazards that can be addressed to reduce the risk of a burn. Programmes are also recommended to reduce costs and the inappropriate prescribing of medication.
