The prevalence of atopic dermatitis and other allergic diseases is increasing in industrialized countries. Today we know that atopy is conditioned genetically, but the development of the atopic phenotype requires environmental factors. It is believed that the genetic factors have not changed and that the increased prevalence is due to the increase in exposure to allergenic and non-specific environmental factors. ⋯ At present, pharmacological prevention is being studied, without overlooking environmental prevention, in children at high risk of atopic disease for the purpose of preventing chronic inflammations that will condition their future as adults. In our daily clinical experience, atopic dermatitis is responsible for 8% of visits to a pediatric allergology unit. We emphasize that 62.5% of our patients with dermatitis are referred when they already have bronchial asthma, which represents an important delay in diagnosis with respect to the onset of symptoms.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialComparative study of inhaled amiloride and inhaled furosemide in exercise-induced asthma.
Certain diuretics such as furosemide, when inhaled, have been found to be useful in preventing Exercise-Induced Asthma (EIA). ⋯ Amiloride is not useful to protect EIA whereas Furosemide does it. These differences results may be related to the differents mechanisms of action of the two diuretics.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialTime course of methacholine induced bronchoconstriction during drugs and spontaneous resolution.
We examined the resolution of the bronchial spasm induced by methacholine after administration of a dose sufficient to provoke PD20 to study, in patients with bronchial asthma, how spontaneous resolution (as opposed to bronchodilator-induced resolution) takes place. According to a randomization criterion, the patients were divided into four groups: 1) resolution induced by salbutamol (S), 2) by ipratropium bromide (I), 3) after placebo (P) and 4) spontaneous resolution (R). ⋯ On the whole, this phenomenon shows that pharmacological treatment accelerates the process of spontaneous resolution of the bronchial spasm induced by methacholine which, in our experience, beings to show after 15 minutes, and that after 60 minutes, there are no statistically significant differences in the four groups. It is our opinion that closer examination of this phenomenon may provide greater knowledge of the mechanisms that come into play during the phase after stimulation of the muscarinic receptors and that reasonably involve the system to eliminate the muscarinic drug.

Comparative Study Clinical Trial Controlled Clinical TrialExercise-induced asthma prophylaxis in athletes using inhaled nedocromil sodium.
This open labelled, group comparative, cross over study, was carried out to analyze the efficacy of two dosages of Nedocromil sodium (NS) in the prophylaxis of Exercise Induced Asthma (EIA). 13 athletes (6 males, 7 females), aged: 12-38 years, were studied measuring their EIA by forced spirometries prior and at 1, 3, 5, 10, 15 and 30 minutes post treadmill test. Four mg of NS were administered via inhalation chamber 30 minutes prior to the second test; prior to the third one;: NS at a dose of 4 mg every 8 hours during four weeks plus 4 mg of NS 30 minutes before it. ⋯ Nedocromil sodium (4 mg prior to exercise) is effective for EIA prophylaxis. Although no significant differences exist between both dosages, a greater protection index is reached after NS sustained administration.
