The laryngeal tube has a potential role during anaesthesia, but there have been only a few studies assessing its efficacy during the entire course of anaesthesia, and all previous studies used prototypes. We studied 100 patients to assess the efficacy of a new laryngeal tube during the entire course of anaesthesia. ⋯ The laryngeal tube can be useful for maintaining a patent airway during anaesthesia.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialChanges in onset time of rocuronium in patients pretreated with ephedrine and esmolol--the role of cardiac output.
We investigated the hypothesis that manipulation of cardiac output (CO) with esmolol (Es) or ephedrine (E) affects the onset time of rocuronium. ⋯ Pretreatment with E or Es appears to affect the onset time of rocuronium by altering CO as measured with the NICO (Non-Invasive Cardiac Output) monitor (Novametrix Medical Systems Inc., Willingford, CO).

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialAnalgesic effect of i.v. paracetamol: possible ceiling effect of paracetamol in postoperative pain.
Despite the widespread use of paracetamol for many years, the analgesic serum concentrations of paracetamol are unknown. Therefore the correlation between serum paracetamol concentrations and the analgesic effect was studied. ⋯ We showed a significant opioid-sparing effect of paracetamol in the immediate postoperative period. Pharmacokinetic data were in accordance with other studies. Our results suggest that a ceiling effect of paracetamol may be present at i.v. doses of 5 mg kg(-1), i.e. a serum concentration of 14 mg l(-1), which is a lower dose than previously suggested.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialComparison of the catheter-technique psoas compartment block and the epidural block for analgesia in partial hip replacement surgery.
The aim of this study was to compare the intra- and postoperative analgesia provided by the catheter-technique psoas compartment block and the epidural block in hip-fractured patients. We also compared hemodynamic stability, motor blockade, ease of performing the technique, and complications. ⋯ The continuous psoas compartment block provides excellent intraoperative and postoperative analgesia with a low incidence of complications for partial hip replacement surgery

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialIntravenous clonidine prolongs bupivacaine spinal anesthesia.
Prolongation of spinal anesthesia by oral clonidine premedication has been known. We hypothesized that intravenous clonidine administered after the spinal block may prolong spinal anesthesia. ⋯ Intravenous clonidine administration within 1 h after the spinal block prolonged bupivacaine spinal anesthesia for approximately 1 h without adverse effects.
