Supraspinatus tendon reconstruction using open infraspinatus tendon shift and autologous biceps tendon interposition grafts.
Inferior tendon quality, wide retraction, and tendon stumps that cannot be mobilized define the limits of what is technically feasible for open and arthroscopic rotator cuff reconstruction. The aim of this study was to develop a procedure that enables the open reconstruction of otherwise non-reconstructable rotator cuff tears. ⋯ The surgical procedure using infraspinatus tendon shift and autologous biceps tendon interposition grafts resulted in the successful reconstruction of otherwise non-reconstructable massive rotator cuff lesions. The complete closure of the defect was observed.

ReviewConcomitant injuries in patients with thoracic vertebral body fractures-a systematic literature review.
The aim of this study was to give a systematic overview over the rate and location of concomitant injuries, the probability of suffering from neurological deficits, and to give evidence of the timing of surgery in severely injured patients with unstable thoracic vertebral body fractures. ⋯ The evidence of the available literature is low. The cited studies reveal that thoracic spinal fractures are associated with a high number of neurological deficits and concomitant injuries, particularly of the thoracic cage and the lung. Thereby, diagnostic algorithm should include computer tomography of the whole thoracic cage if there is any clinical sign of concomitant injuries. Patients with incomplete neurologic deficits benefit from early surgery consisting of decompression and long-segmental stabilization.

Review Case ReportsBosworth fracture complicated by unrecognized compartment syndrome: a case report and review of the literature.
Compartment syndrome (CS) is exceedingly rare in ankle fractures. However, the risk of CS development seems to be increased in the presence of a Bosworth fracture-dislocation (BF), a rare variant of locked dislocation of the fibula behind the tibia. ⋯ Given the extreme paucity of CS in malleolar fractures, CS in BF has a relatively high prevalence. Risk factors include severe dislocations, repeated attempts on closed reduction, and a long interval to definite surgery. A high index of suspicion is required because delayed diagnosis leads to lasting functional restrictions.

Distance from the magnification device contributes to differences in lower leg length measured in patients with TSF correction.
In absence of deformity or injury of the contralateral leg, the contralateral leg length is used to plan limb lengthening. Length variability on long-leg weight-bearing radiographs (LLR) can lead to inaccurate deformity correction. The aim of the study was to (1) examine the variability of the measured limb length on LLR and (2) to examine the influence of the position of the magnification device. ⋯ High variability of limb length between different LLR within one patient was observed. This can result from different positions of the magnification device in the sagittal plane. These small changes in positioning the device should be avoided to achieve accurate deformity correction and bone lengthening. This should be considered for all length and size measurements on radiographs.

Protocol-based interdisciplinary co-management for hip fracture care: 3 years of experience at an academic medical center.
Interdisciplinary standardized protocols for the care of patients with hip fractures have been shown to improve outcomes. A hip fracture protocol was implemented at our institution to standardize care, focusing on emergency care, pre-operative medical management, operative timing, and geriatrics co-management.
