Observational StudyThe Adherence to an Intraoperative Blood Product Transfusion Algorithm Is Associated With Reduced Blood Product Transfusions in Cardiac Surgical Patients Undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Grafts and Aortic and/or Valve Replacement Surgery: A Single-Center, Observational Study.
To demonstrate the value of a viscoelastic-based intraoperative transfusion algorithm to reduce non-RBC product administration in adult cardiac surgical patients. ⋯ After the implementation of a viscoelastic-based algorithm, patients received fewer packed RBC, FFP, platelets, cryoprecipitate, and cell saver. Algorithm-compliant patients received fewer transfusions; however, reductions in times to extubation, ICU LOS, and hospital LOS were not statistically significant compared with historic controls.

Predictive Role of Preoperative Nutritional Status on Early Postoperative Outcomes in Different-Aged Patients Undergoing Heart Valve Surgery.
The authors sought to elucidate the role and predictive effects of preoperative nutritional status on postoperative outcomes across different age groups undergoing heart valve surgery. ⋯ In patients who undergo heart valve surgery, early postoperative outcomes can be influenced by nutritional status before the surgery. In the young-adult group, NRI <99 and NRI <97 effectively could predict prolonged intensive care unit stay and 30-day mortality, respectively.

European Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia Fellowship Program: A First Proof of Concept.
The Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia (PCA) fellowship is a demanding training program in Europe and the United States. Successful completion of the program requires years of training in anesthesiology, a thorough understanding of cardiovascular anatomy and physiology, and extensive experience in the perioperative management of neonates and children with heart disease. In the context of the first candidate to successfully complete the PCA program in Europe, this article presents excerpts from the design and structure of the European PCA program. The PCA program is evaluated critically by both external and internal reviewers, and points are highlighted that could be included in the next version of the program.
