In order to satisfy the need of a tool for assessing the treatment of patients with degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis, an evaluation was made of the reliability, construct validity, and responsiveness of the Norwegian version of Spinal Stenosis Measure (SSM, original by Stucki)). This study was a part of a prospective, cohort study. About 75 patients referred for surgery for spinal stenosis participated in the study. ⋯ The correlation analyses showed high correlation between scales that assessed the same construct, and low to moderate correlation between scales that assessed different constructs. Large effect sizes were found in all the SSM subscales with effect sizes > or =1.2. The Norwegian SSM version has added a highly useful tool for assessing the disease specific status and outcome after treatment in patients who suffer from degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis.

Subsidence of various constructs into the vertebral body is a well-known complication in anterior fusion. Information on bone structure is needed, as a basis for improving these procedures. There are, however, no data available on the distribution of mineral density within vertebral endplates. ⋯ The mineralization distribution showed characteristic reproducible patterns. The maximal values occurred in the posterolateral parts, and can thus be considered a morphological substrate of high long-term loading. This can serve as a basis for improved prosthesis design and the anchorage point for various fusion techniques.

We report a multilevel modified vertebral column resection (MVCR) through a single posterior approach and clinical outcomes for treatment of severe congenital rigid kyphoscoliosis in adults. Transpedicular eggshell osteotomies and vertebral column resection are two techniques for the surgical treatment of rigid severe spine deformities. The authors developed a new technique combining the two surgical methods as a MVCR, through a single posterior approach, for surgical treatment of severe congenital rigid kyphoscoliosis in adults. ⋯ SRS-24 scale was from 38.2 preoperatively to 76.9 at 2 years follow-up postoperative. Complications were encountered in four patients (30.7%) with transient neurology that spontaneously improved without further treatment within 3 months. MVCR technique through a single posterior approach is an effective procedure for the surgical treatment of severe congenital rigid kyphoscoliosis in adults.

Design of the experiment is to study the cross-sectional sample with retrospective information. The objective is to identify the types of physical activity associated with the decreased occurrence of low-back pain (LBP) in schoolchildren. Physical activity may be hypothesized to possess a potential for LBP prevention. ⋯ Among sports activities, only swimming and the number of hours per week participating in soccer were associated with a decreased LBP prevalence. With the exception of swimming and soccer, the types of sport reported by this schoolchild population do not offer themselves for consideration as tools for LBP prevention. Based on the associations found with indicators of physical inactivity, attempts to motivate the children to increase their general physical activity level should be considered for trial.
