To determine the effect of elective abdominal surgery on the rate of human colon fractional protein synthesis in situ. ⋯ Elective abdominal surgery followed by an uncomplicated postoperative course is associated with a stimulation of colon protein synthesis and possibly also of protein degradation. The postoperative rate of colon protein synthesis is, compared with other tissues, among the highest measured thus far in humans.

To demonstrate enhanced bone marrow monocytopoiesis in response to thermal injury and sepsis and to provide a mechanism for this observation. ⋯ The data validate the premise that enhanced monocytopoiesis in thermal injury and sepsis results from an imbalance in myelopoiesis that is driven by the increased expression of macrophage colony-stimulating factor receptor.

Comparative Study
Use of fibrin sealant for prosthetic mesh fixation in laparoscopic extraperitoneal inguinal hernia repair.
To evaluate the efficacy of mesh fixation with fibrin sealant (FS) in laparoscopic preperitoneal inguinal hernia repair and to compare it with stapled fixation. ⋯ An adequate mesh fixation in the extraperitoneal inguinal area can be accomplished using FS. This method is mechanically equivalent to the fixation achieved by staples and superior to nonfixed grafts. Biologic soft fixation with FS will prevent early graft migration and will avoid the complications associated with staple use.

To determine whether liver transplantation is judicious in recipients older than 60 years of age. ⋯ Low-risk elderly patients fare as well as younger patients after liver transplantation. However, unless results can be improved, high-risk patients older than 60 years should probably not undergo liver transplantation.

To evaluate the effectiveness of endoscopic retroperitoneal adrenalectomy (ERA). ⋯ For benign adrenal tumors less than 6 cm, ERA is recommended.
