Meta AnalysisAdverse Outcomes Associated With Intraoperative Anesthesia Handovers: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.
Whether intraoperative handover of anesthesia care increases the risk of adverse outcomes in patients undergoing surgery remains unclear. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the evidence on the association of intraoperative anesthesia handover with delivery of patient care and patient outcomes. ⋯ The findings suggested that each additional intraoperative anesthesia handover increased the odds of composite morbidity. It is important to improve the handover quality and avoid handovers when anesthesia providers have high-risk care events, patients having unstable status, or inadequate handover time.

Meta AnalysisProphylactic Nalbuphine to Prevent Neuraxial Opioid-Induced Pruritus: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.
Evaluate the efficacy of prophylactic nalbuphine in preventing neuraxial opioid-induced pruritus. ⋯ Prophylactic nalbuphine decreased the incidence and severity of pruritus without adverse effects on sedation and analgesic effect of opioids.

Meta AnalysisManagement of Emergence Delirium in Adult PTSD Patients: Recommendations for Practice.
Emergence delirium is a known phenomenon which occurs after general anesthesia in approximately 5% of the general population. However, individuals who have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder may present with symptoms refractory to conventional methods of reorientation. In the past several years, literature has begun to address the problem, but no standardized guidelines exist at present. The authors synthesize the available literature, combining data with evidence-driven principles from multiple disciplines, to submit an initial set of guidelines until research either supports or disproves these recommendations.

Meta AnalysisA Meta-Analysis of Palonosetron for the Prevention of Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting in Adults.
The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the effectiveness and adverse effects of palonosetron in the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). ⋯ The results of this meta-analysis suggest that intravenous palonosetron could become a prophylactic antiemetic 5-HT3RA in the prevention of PONV compared with first-generation 5-HT3RAs or placebo. No increased risk of side effects with palonosetron were found.

Meta AnalysisIntradermal lidocaine or bacteriostatic normal saline to decrease pain before intravenous catheter insertion: a meta-analysis.
Anesthetics used to decrease pain during peripheral intravenous catheter insertion have been studied with equivocal results. This meta-analysis determined if lidocaine or bacteriostatic normal saline (BaNS) is more effective in reducing pain associated with peripheral intravenous catheter cannulation in adults. ⋯ Cost-benefit issues and lidocaine drug shortages must be considered when making definitive practice recommendations.
