Pain and behaviour changes in children following surgery.
To quantify postoperative pain and problematic behaviour (PB) in children at home following day-case (same day admission and discharge) or inpatient (≥1 night in hospital) surgery, to identify factors associated with PB at 2 and 4 weeks after discharge and to determine whether pain is associated with PB after adjustment for other factors. ⋯ There was a high incidence of pain and PB persisting for several weeks after surgery in this cohort of children. Previous painful medical experiences and anxiety were important modifiable factors that require further attention from healthcare providers and researchers to potentially improve health and social outcomes for children after surgery.

Inpatient care for children with diabetes: are standards being met?
Hospital inpatient care is frequently mentioned by parents as unsatisfactory for children with diabetes. Ward staff are now less familiar with diabetes, as admissions are less common and diabetes management is more intensive. ⋯ This first audit of children's diabetes inpatient care organisation demonstrates that some standards can be achieved, but others, such as having children's nurses on every shift in EDs, lack of dietetic advice to ward staff, and liaison with the diabetes team quickly out of hours, are more challenging. Further planned audit outcomes are to produce patient and parent literature for children admitted to hospital and to refine the standards further.

Oesophageal atresia: prevalence, prenatal diagnosis and associated anomalies in 23 European regions.
To describe prevalence, prenatal diagnosis and epidemiological data on oesophageal atresia from 23 well-defined European regions and compare the prevalence between these regions. ⋯ There were regional differences in prevalence of oesophageal atresia in Europe. Half of all cases had associated anomalies. Prenatal detection rate increased from 26% to 36.5% over the two decades. Survival in infants with isolated oesophageal atresia born at term is high.

Pulse oximetry as a screening test for congenital heart defects in newborn infants: a cost-effectiveness analysis.
To undertake a cost-effectiveness analysis that compares pulse oximetry as an adjunct to clinical examination with clinical examination alone in newborn screening for congenital heart defects (CHDs). ⋯ Pulse oximetry as an adjunct to current routine practice of clinical examination alone is likely to be considered a cost-effective strategy in the light of currently accepted thresholds.

Higher rates of behavioural and emotional problems at preschool age in children born moderately preterm.
To compare preschool children born moderately preterm (MP; 32-35 weeks' gestation) and children born at term (38-41 weeks' gestation) regarding the occurrence of behavioural and emotional problems, overall, for separate types of problems and by gender. ⋯ Moderate preterm birth affects all domains of behavioural and emotional problems, particularly for girls. MP children should be targeted for the prevention of mental health problems as they have a great impact on developmental and social competencies at school and in the community.
