Multicenter Study
Quality of pain treatment after caesarean section: Results of a multicentre cohort study.
A large cohort study recently reported high pain scores after caesarean section (CS). The aim of this study was to analyse how pain after CS interferes with patients' activities and to identify possible causes of insufficient pain treatment. ⋯ In daily clinical practice, pain after CS is much higher than previously thought. Pain management was insufficient compared with patients undergoing hysterectomy. Unfavourable outcome was mainly associated with low opioid administration after CS. Contradictory pain treatment guidelines for patients undergoing CS and for breastfeeding mothers might contribute to reluctance of opioid administration in CS patients.

Zolmitriptan inhibits neurogenic inflammation and pain during electrical stimulation in human skin.
Triptans are agonists to 5-HT 1B/D/F receptors, which are present on nociceptive neurons not only within but also beyond the trigeminal system. The aim of this study was to investigate whether zolmitriptan interacts with peptidergic nociceptive afferents in human skin. ⋯ Triptans may have effects outside of the trigeminal system and reduce electrically evoked neurogenic inflammation and pain in human skin.

Pain has consistently been viewed as containing two dimensions, a sensory (intensity) and an emotional (unpleasantness). It has been suggested that pain involves higher order cognitive processes that go beyond unpleasantness. We therefore aimed at extending the assessment of pain by introducing an additional dimension of pain-related suffering and identifying noxious stimulation protocols that are most adequate for its psychophysical and psychophysiological characterization. ⋯ These results suggest that in acute pain, suffering is a constitutive dimension that might even be more crucial in clinical states of pain.
