Meta Analysis
Consumption of fruits and vegetables and risk of renal cell carcinoma: a meta-analysis of observational studies.
There have been inconsistent results about the association between consumption of fruits and vegetables and renal cell carcinoma (RCC) risk. We conducted a meta-analysis of the published observational studies to explore this association. ⋯ This meta-analysis indicated a protective effect of consumption of vegetables and fruits on RCC risk. Further studies are warranted with prospective designs that use validated questionnaires and control for important confounders.

This study investigated the expression and function of the microRNA-494 in intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD). ⋯ MicroRNA-494 promotes ECM degradation and apoptosis of degenerative human NP cells by directly targeting SOX9.

Endometrial Carcinoma (EMCA) is the most common gynecologic malignancy and the fourth most common malignancy in women in the United States. Yes-associated protein (YAP) is a potent transcription coactivator acting via binding to the TEAD transcription factor, and plays a critical role in organ size regulation. Verteporfin (VP), a benzoporphyrin derivative, was identified as an inhibitor of YAP-TEAD interaction. ⋯ Quantitative RT-PCR, cDNA based RTPCR array analysis and western blotting were performed to investigate the mechanism of VP action. The cytotoxic and anti-proliferative effects appeared to be independent of its effect on YAP. Our results suggest that VP is a promising chemotherapeutic agent for the treatment of endometrial cancer.

The gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase-to-platelet ratio (GPR) is a novel serum model, which was reported more accurate than aspartate transaminase-to-platelet ratio index (APRI) and fibrosis index based on four factors (FIB-4) for diagnosing significant fibrosis and cirrhosis in HBV mono-infection in West Africa. We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of GPR for liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). ⋯ The GPR could be used as a non-invasive marker to predict liver fibrosis and cirrhosis in CHB-NAFLD individuals.

The relationship between marital status and oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC) survival has not been explored. The objective of our study was to evaluate the impact of marital status on OCSCC survival and investigate the potential mechanisms. ⋯ Marriage has an independently protective effect on OCSCC survival. Earlier diagnosis and more sufficient treatment are possible explanations. Besides, even after 1:1 matching, survival advantage of married group still exists, indicating that spousal support from other aspects may also play an important role.
