To examine the relationship between analgesia and clinical outcome and to review new methods of delivering opioid analgesics and new pharmacologic analgesic agents. ⋯ New technology and new agents allow more rational management of postoperative pain. Use of these techniques results in increased patient satisfaction and may improve clinical outcome.

To investigate the physiologic effects of nitric oxide synthase inhibition with N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester in an acute resuscitated model of porcine septic shock. ⋯ The potentiation of LPS-induced pulmonary hypertension following NAME infusion suggests that inhibition of nitric oxide synthase may have a limited role in the treatment of septic shock.
