Randomized Controlled TrialCould intraoperative magnesium sulphate protect against postoperative cognitive dysfunction?
Although there is much concern about the pathogenesis of postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD); no effective prevention strategies are currently described. The aim of this work was to study whether intraoperative magnesium sulphate could have a protective effect against developing POCD and to study its impact on serum level of S100B, a marker of neuronal degeneration. ⋯ Administration of intravenous infusion of magnesium sulphate during conventional general anesthesia can protect against POCD and attenuate the post operative elevation of serum S100B.

Randomized Controlled TrialComparison of the i-gelTM with the AuraGainTM laryngeal mask airways in patients with a simulated cervical immobilization: a randomized controlled trial.
The use of second generation supraglottic airway devices is recommended for airway rescue in failed tracheal intubation. This study was performed to compare the clinical performance of the i-gel™ with that of the AuraGain™ in patients with simulated cervical immobilization. ⋯ The i-gel™ and the AuraGain™ showed comparable oropharyngeal leak pressures and success rates in the first attempt in patients with simulated cervical immobilization. However, the i-gel™ was easier to insert and required less time for insertion than the AuraGain™.

Randomized Controlled TrialDesflurane is not inferior to sevoflurane in the occurrence of adverse respiratory events during laryngeal mask airway anesthesia: a noninferiority randomized double-blinded controlled study.
Compared to sevoflurane, desflurane is less favorable to most anesthesiologists for laryngeal mask airway (LMA) anesthesia because desflurane has a pungent odor. This non-inferiority study aimed to determine whether desflurane is not worse than sevoflurane in triggering airway irritations during general anesthesia using LMA. ⋯ Desflurane is non-inferior to sevoflurane in the occurrence of laryngospasm at emergence after LMA anesthesia. The superiority of desflurane compared to sevoflurane with regards to respiratory complications requires further investigation.

Randomized Controlled TrialPsychology versus medication for pre-anesthesia preparation of children: a randomized controlled trial.
Reducing preoperative anxiety is important as inadequate preoperative management can potentially give rise to behavioral problems in the postoperative course, leading to incalculable quantitative and qualitative handicaps later in life. We compared preanesthetic administration of midazolam to a psychological strategy of walking the children through the operating room and playfully demonstrating anesthesia equipment. ⋯ All psychometric instruments used in this study indicated that our psychological strategy of preanesthesia preparation was capable of successfully reducing anxiety in paediatric patients and their parents.

Randomized Controlled TrialGlideScope® versus Macintosh laryngoscope for assessment of post-thyroidectomy vocal cord dysfunction: prospective randomized study.
Early detection of post-thyroidectomy vocal cord dysfunction is crucial. This study compared GlideScope® with Macintosh direct laryngoscope (MDL) regarding the accuracy of assessment of post-thyroidectomy vocal cord dysfunction. ⋯ This study demonstrates that GlideScope® is a better alternative to MDL for an accurate detection of post-thyroidectomy vocal cord dysfunction.
