Recommendations that may help reduce adverse events outside the perioperative period are uncommon. We identified the primary factors that contributed to patient injury in neurosurgical practice both within the perioperative period and outside the perioperative period. ⋯ In addition to excellent surgical technique, checklists, teamwork, outcomes measurement, and regionalization of subspecialty care, improving patient safety in neurosurgical practice requires careful attention to care provided outside the perioperative period. Differential diagnosis, consideration of all relevant clinical data, active pursuit of good physician-patient relationships, and adequate monitoring of patients receiving nonsurgical treatment may also help improve patient safety in neurosurgical practice.

Subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease in Hong Kong: A prospective territory-wide 2 year follow-up study.
We assessed the effects of bilateral subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS) in patients with Parkinson disease at the 1-year and 2-year follow-up evaluations. Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) motor score at "off" medication ("on" DBS) and quality-of-life assessments (39-item Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire [PDQ-39]) were conducted. The percentage of awake "on" time and awake "off" time and levodopa requirement were also assessed. ⋯ The effects of STN DBS in patients with Parkinson disease in Hong Kong were satisfactory. The results showed that reduction in UPDRS motor score, awake "off"-time, and daily levodopa dosage were the major drivers of overall improvement in PDQ-39.

Metastatic thymic carcinoma presenting as a posterior fossa mass: case report and review of the literature.
Thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) are uncommon lesions, and cerebral metastases from these tumors are even rarer. We report a case of a posterior fossa metastasis in a patient with a known history of thymic carcinoma. ⋯ Metastasis should be considered in the differential of a patient with a TET and an intracranial mass lesion.

Long-term Prognosis of Spontaneous Intracerebral Hemorrhage on the Tibetan Plateau: A Prospective Cohort study at Two Hospitals.
Patterns of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and outcomes in Tibetans are poorly understood. We aimed to investigate the long-term outcomes of Tibetan ICH patients. ⋯ Most cases of ICH on the Tibetan Plateau involve concomitant hypertension. Tibetan patients are at higher risk of disability or disability/death on follow-up than are patients from Chengdu Plain.
