A checklist for timeout on labor and delivery: a pilot study to improve communication and safety.
To assess the impact on staff communication of a standardized checklist for timeout for patients undergoing a trial of labor after cesarean section and/or elective induction at term. ⋯ Implementation of a formalized obstetric timeout improved the subjective perception of communication among obstetric staff. This tool has the potential to improve patient safety in labor and delivery.

To determine if an association exists between Montevideo units (MVUs) and uterine rupture in women undergoing trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC). ⋯ There is no association between MVUs and uterine rupture in women undergoing a TOLAC.

To assess emotional intelligence (EQ) and the construct validity of the EQ Appraisal survey among academic faculty, residents, and medical students. ⋯ EQ varied with level of training. EQ competence may occur by Collaborating and Assertive Behaviors utilizing Influence and Steadiness/Submissiveness personality domains.

To obtain quantitative data on uterine contractility postpartum and compare the response of intramuscular oxytocin to carbetocin. ⋯ IUPT monitoring generated quantitative data on postpartum uterine activity. When compared to high-dose oxytocin, a low dose of carbetocin has a more prolonged effect on uterine activity both in terms of a higher amplitude and frequency of contractions.

To determine whether obstetric handoff quality differs morning versus evening, weekend versus weekday, or based on provider type. ⋯ Based on criteria developed for this study, handoff quality may vary based on time of day and provider type. These findings present an opportunity to further assess reasons for variation and propose changes to standardize and improve the handoff process.
