Differences of tumor microenvironment between stage I lepidic-positive and lepidic-negative lung adenocarcinomas.
Lepidic growth is a noninvasive component of lung adenocarcinoma. Many adenocarcinoma cases contain coexistent lepidic and nonlepidic (invasive) components (lepidic-growth positive [Lep+] adenocarcinoma); however, some cases comprise only nonlepidic components (lepidic-growth negative [Lep-] adenocarcinoma). The aim of this study was to investigate the biological differences between the invasive components of Lep+ and Lep- adenocarcinoma. ⋯ Our results indicated that lower cancer cell-specific expression levels of hypoxia markers and a smaller number of tumor-promoting stromal cells in invasive component were characteristic features of Lep+ adenocarcinomas.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyProspective, randomized, controlled trial of polymer cable ties versus standard wire closure of midline sternotomy.
Midline sternotomy remains the most common access incision for cardiac operations. Traditionally, the sternum is closed with stainless steel wires. Wires are well known to stretch and break, however, leading to pain, nonunion, and potential deep sternal wound infection. We hypothesized that biocompatible plastic cable ties would achieve a more rigid sternal fixation, reducing postoperative pain and analgesia requirements. ⋯ ZIPFIX sternal cable ties provide reliable closure but no demonstrable benefit in this study in pain or analgesic requirements relative to standard wire closure after median sternotomy.

One-year outcomes associated with a novel stented bovine pericardial aortic bioprosthesis.
The study objectives were to evaluate the safety, effectiveness, and hemodynamic performance of a new stented bovine pericardial aortic valve. ⋯ This analysis of a new stented bovine pericardial aortic valve demonstrated low overall mortality and valve-related adverse events, and hemodynamic performance comparable to that of other surgical aortic valves.
