The prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency, its etiology, and associated sequelae among acutely injured burn patients is unknown. ⋯ Demonstration of a high incidence of low serum vitamin D indicates vitamin D status may be significantly compromised in burned children. It is unclear why vitamin D deficiency exists in this population. The most effective way to improve vitamin D status remains elusive at this time.

To describe trends in use of specific vitamin and mineral (VM) supplements. ⋯ The increasing trend in supplement use over time and the notable use of nonvitamin/nonmineral supplements in 2000 indicates the continued need to monitor the use of all types of dietary supplements for purposes of dietary surveillance and nutrition-related research.
