The aim of our study was to determine the relationship between neuropeptide B (NPB), neuropeptide W (NPW), nutritional and antioxidant status and selected fat- and bone-derived factors in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) treated using pens (T1DM pen group) or insulin pumps (T1DM pump group) in order to investigate the potential role of NPB and NPW in the clinical outcomes of T1DM. ⋯ Measurements of NPB and NPW, besides leptin and adiponectin, are worth considering in the detailed prognosis of nutritional status in T1DM, primarily in the T1DM pen-treated population.

The aim of the study was to investigate the mRNA expression and protein levels of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) 2 (MMP-2), 9 (MMP-9), 7 (MMP-7) and their tissue inhibitor TIMP-2 in patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and control subjects and additionally to evaluate a possible correlation with clinicopathological features. ⋯ The results may suggest that MMPs and TIMP-2 are associated with laryngeal tumorigenesis, but we did not find any distinct correlation between the clinicopathological features of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma patients and expression levels of MMPs and TIMP. The results suggest that the measurement of serum MMP-2, MMP-7, MMP-9 and TIMP-2 concentration might be helpful to diagnose laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

The outcome of patients ≥ 60 years of age after alcohol septal ablation (ASA) for obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) remains unresolved. We sought to determine the long-term survival and the causes of death in this population. ⋯ Alcohol septal ablation was safe and effective in the long-term follow-up. We observed a reduced life expectancy compared to the age- and sex-matched general population. Mortality was almost equally due to cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular causes of death.

The aim of the study was to further explore the pathogenesis of idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN), gene-sequencing was used to analyze the differentially expressed circRNAs in exosomes of patients with IMN, which may lay the foundation for the research of circRNAs as a new class of exosome-based IMN diagnosis biomarkers. ⋯ The significant differential and specific expression of circRNAs in the exosomes from patients with IMN were observed. For example, MUC3A, which originated from chr7:100550808|100551062, could be considered a potential diagnostic biomarker of IMN. Furthermore, these figures may be used as a reference or supplement in the research of the pathogenesis of IMN.

Sensitivities and specificities of clinical signs and biochemical tests in sepsis diagnosis are not satisfactory. The aim of the study was to assess the diagnostic usefulness of soluble triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells-1 (sTREM-1) in sepsis, severe sepsis and septic shock against interleukin-6 (IL-6), C-reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin (PCT). ⋯ Serum level of sTREM-1 has lower effectiveness as a diagnostic biomarker in severe sepsis and septic shock, in comparison with CRP and IL-6.
