MicroRNAs (miRs) are small noncoding RNAs which are regulators of gene expression and also regulate the genes in heart tissues. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of miRs on the expression level of myosin heavy chain (MHC), which is responsible for regulation of cardiac functions in neonatal rat ventricular myocytes and mice. ⋯ The findings of the present study indicated that miR-29a modulates expression of α-the MHC gene by targeting TR-β1 in cardiac cells. The study may provide a new direction for treating cardiac failure and cardiac hypertrophy.

Chondrocyte apoptosis as a prominent characteristic is usually accompanied by cartilage degeneration in osteoarthritis (OA). Herein, we aimed to determine the roles of miR-149-5p in tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)-induced chondrocyte apoptosis. ⋯ miR-149-5p inversely regulated TNF-α-mediated chondrocyte damage by inhibiting TRADD-modulated caspases signaling. The miR-149-5p/TRADD signaling pathway might be a promising therapeutic target for the treatment of OA.

Pediatric transplantation is an extremely complex and emotionally difficult area of pediatric medicine. The process of obtaining a pediatric donor by the staff is an extremely delicate topic, and for the family of the deceased child, often an unimaginable and painful process. The aim of the study was to analyze parents' opinions on pediatric transplantology. Methods: The research survey method was applied using an original survey questionnaire made available electronically using a Google form. The group analyzed included 203 respondents. ⋯ There is a need for social education in the field of pediatric transplantation and to facilitate access to professional psychological care for pediatric patients and/or their caregivers.

Transfusion of red blood cells (RBCs) is not devoid of risks; nor is anemia. The aim of the study was to assess the usefulness of a program designed to improve the appropriateness of RBC transfusions in hospital patients. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed time periods before and after program implementation. ⋯ A simple program may lead to a 3-fold decrease in transfusion rate and a significant increase in the percentage of appropriate RBC transfusions.

Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) therapy involves the inhalation of pure oxygen in a pressure chamber under increased ambient pressure. Recent research indicates that circulating small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) play important roles in human physiology and pathology. Therefore, the objective of this pilot study was to monitor the impact of HBO2 therapy on the levels of circulating sEVs in the serum of patients with necrotizing soft-tissue infections (NSTI), aseptic bone necrosis (ABN) or idiopathic sudden sensory neural hearing loss (ISSNHL). ⋯ The increase in the levels of sEVs in ISSNHL may be evidence for both the intended reduction of inflammation as a result of steroid therapy and the inhibitory effect of oxidative stress induced by HBO2 therapy. Thus, sEVs released during HBO2 therapy might play an important biological role in mediating the response to therapy and might be a promising approach to gain further insights into the therapeutic efficacy of HBO2 therapy.
