Obstetric dfficult airway is a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. The laryngeal mask airway (LMA) is often used as a rescue airway device after failed intubation, however, little is known about predictors of difficult LMA insertion, particularly in obstetrics. Since Mallampati scores of III/IV has been associated with difficult tracheal intubation, our present study aims to investigate if Mallampati score (MP) could predict airway outcomes for LMA use in obstetrics. ⋯ High MP was not associated with reduced SLMA airway outcomes in cesarean section under general anesthesia, but may increase the risk of blood found on SLMA upon removal.

A randomized, double-blind study of the ultrasound assessment of the effect of pharyngeal packing on perioperative gastric volume in nasal surgery.
Pharyngeal packing (PP) is commonly performed to reduce the incidence of perioperative blood ingestion (PBI) in nasal surgery (NS), and thus the incidence and severity of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). This study examined the effects of PP on the perioperative gastric volume (GV) and PONV in patients undergoing NS, by ultrasound assessment. ⋯ The study findings indicate that PP reduces the increase in the perioperative GV due to PBI in an elective NS. It is therefore a useful and safe means of reducing the risk of perioperative pulmonary aspiration in such surgeries.

Comparison of several methods for pain management after video-assisted thoracic surgery for pneumothorax: an observational study.
There is no defined gold standard for pain management after video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) for pneumothorax. In addition to systemic analgesia, various loco-regional analgesic techniques have been proposed but remain poorly evaluated in this context. We aimed to assess the analgesic efficacy of several of these techniques for the management of postoperative pain. ⋯ This study suggests that serratus plane block combined with continuous infusion through a catheter may have some benefits, although further studies are needed to confirm these results and determine the true place of the serratus plane block in pain management after VATS for pneumothorax.

Validity of accuracy and trending ability of non-invasive continuous total hemoglobin measurement in complex spine surgery: a prospective cohort study.
Patients undergoing complex spine surgery present with multilevel spinal involvement, advanced age, and multiple comorbidities. Surgery is associated with significant blood loss and remarkable hemodynamic changes. The present study aimed to investigate the accuracy and trending ability of a non-invasive continuous method to monitor hemoglobin (SpHb) concentrations using a Radical-7™ Pulse CO-Oximeter in complex spine surgery. ⋯ The present study demonstrates the acceptable accuracy of the Radical-7™ Pulse CO-Oximeter even with a low PI. However, the trending ability was limited and unsatisfactory.

Quick and complete recovery of cognitive function after general anesthesia is desirable, particularly for working-age patients. Desflurane is less likely to have long-term effects than older-generation inhalational anesthetics, however, its short-term effects have not been fully investigated. Our objective was to elucidate the short-term effects of desflurane exposure on learning and memory in young adult rats. ⋯ Exposure to a relatively high concentration of desflurane caused reversible learning and memory impairment in young adult rats associated with suppression of GluR1 delivery to the synapses in the hippocampus.
