Pattern, clinical presentations and management of thyroid diseases in national endocrine referral clinics, Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Thyroid diseases are common endocrine abnormalities affecting the cellular metabolism of the body. There are limited recent studies addressing the different aspects of thyroid diseases in Ethiopia. ⋯ To conduct further studies in different aspects of thyroid disease, strengthening access for radioiodine therapy and introduce anti thyroid antibody tests.

Asymptomatic bacteriuria and symptomatic urinary tract infections (UTI) in patients with diabetes mellitus in Tikur Anbessa Specialized University Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The risk of urinary tract infection in diabetic patients is higher and the etiology and the antibiotic resistance of uropathogens have been changing over the past years. ⋯ The prevalence of urinary tract infection in this study was higher in women than in men. Escherichia coli was frequently isolated in both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients. Over 60% of the isolates were resistant to ampicillin, trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole and tetracycline. Investigation of bacteriuria in diabetic patients for urinary tract infection is important for treatment and prevention of the development of renal complications.

Trauma severities scores and their prediction of outcome among trauma patients in two hospitals of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Trauma is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality all over the world. Developing countries including Ethiopia have been greatly affected with trauma. ⋯ The finding reveals high trauma mortality than predicted in severely injured patient. The major itrauma outcome of this study is worse than the norm in developed countries. Therefore, establishing a database to quantify severe trauma and predict its outcome for standard severe injury care seems important.

Peptic ulcer perforation is a serious complication of peptic ulcer disease with a significant morbidity and mortality. ⋯ Early presentation of patients and change in life style may reduce morbidity and mortality in patients with peptic ulcer perforation.

The Ethiopian Medical Journal celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2012. To mark this anniversary reviewing a bit of history, and addressing the current status and challenges of the Journal would therefore be appropriate. This paper attempts to highlight some important developments and give a quick3review of the papers published over the last five decades. ⋯ The journal played a key role in transforming medical knowledge and was a sound tool in disseminating timely and relevant information in Ethiopia and is going strong.
