Randomized Controlled TrialEffectiveness of Incentive Spirometry on Inspiratory Muscle Strength After Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery.
Although the use of incentive spirometry with a deep breathing exercise (DBE) is widely used in clinical practice in patients who have undergone coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, the effect of this combination therapy has not been conclusively elucidated. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of postoperative combined incentive spirometry and DBE versus DBE alone on inspiratory muscle strength following CABG. ⋯ Patients in the study group had significantly better recovery of inspiratory muscle strength on day 4 post-CABG than patients in the control group. There was no significant difference between groups for either postoperative pulmonary complications or length of hospital stay.

Randomized Controlled TrialParavertebral Block Versus Intercostal Nerve Block in Non-Intubated Uniportal Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery: A Randomised Controlled Trial.
Non-intubated uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) has been reported to be safe and feasible for patients with various thoracic diseases, including those who have respiratory dysfunction. This study examined the anaesthetic and analgesic sparing effects of either paravertebral block or intercostal nerve block on the non-intubated technique with spontaneous ventilation in patients under general anaesthesia (GA) using a supraglottic airway device. The primary aim was to compare the anaesthetic sparing effect of paravertebral block versus intercostal nerve block in non-intubated GA with airway support via a supraglottic airway device during VATS surgery. The secondary aim was to compare the recovery characters and postoperative outcomes of the patients. ⋯ Regional anaesthesia by either preoperative paravertebral block or thoracoscopic intercostal nerve block with ipsilateral vagal block provided an anaesthetic sparing effect, guided by lower Ef sevo concentration, with comparable bi-spectral index in patients undergoing uniportal thoracoscopic surgery.

Randomized Controlled TrialThe Effects of Tai Chi on Lung Function, Exercise Capacity and Health Related Quality of Life for Patients With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Pilot Study.
Although several studies have assessed the effect of Tai Chi in management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), these studies have a wide sample variation and convey inconclusive results. This study aims to determine if a 3-month Tai Chi program improves lung function, exercise capacity, and health related quality of life (HRQoL) in people with COPD. ⋯ The Tai Chi program is a safe, effective and feasible method to improve exercise capacity and health-related quality of life in people with COPD.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffects of Remote Ischaemic Conditioning on Heart Rate Variability and Cardiac Function in Patients With Mild Ischaemic Heart Failure.
Cardioprotective effects of remote ischaemic conditioning (RIC) in the setting of ischaemic heart disease have been shown recently. But the effects of RIC on heart rate variability (HRV) and cardiac function in patients with stable ischaemic heart failure (IHF) are still unknown. ⋯ This study suggests that a 6-week course of RIC treatment could improve cardiac function and HRV in patients with mild and stable IHF, supporting widespread use of RIC in the daily lives of these patients.

Randomized Controlled TrialPrevalence and Metrics Distribution of Ideal Cardiovascular Health: A Population-based, Cross-sectional Study in Rural China.
The American Heart Association (AHA) introduced definitions of "ideal," "intermediate," and "poor" cardiovascular health (CVH) based on seven cardiovascular health metrics (smoking, body mass index, physical activity, diet score, total cholesterol, blood pressure, and fasting glucose). This study used this construct to assess the prevalence and metric distribution of CVH in a rural population with traditional lifestyles and investigate the relationship of CVH with socio-demographic characteristics of participants. ⋯ Our study showed extremely low (0.1%) prevalence of ideal CVH in the rural population of northeast China. The poor CVH status, particularly among men and older individuals, underscores the need for urgent action on modifiable risk factors, especially blood pressure and smoking.
