Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyNasal packing and transseptal suturing techniques: surgical and anaesthetic perspectives.
The objective of this study is to compare the nasal packing and the transseptal suturing techniques regarding the extubation difficulty evaluation scores, follow-up times in post-anaesthesia care unit (PACU), pain scores, and postoperative complications. Two hundred patients who underwent septoplasty from January 2009 to October 2009 were randomly assigned either to have nasal packs (n: 100) or transeptal sutures (n: 100). In the transseptal suture group, extubation was easier and PACU follow-up times were shorter, when compared to the nasal packing group (p < 0.001). ⋯ There was no significant difference in terms of major bleeding, hematoma, infection or perforation. Foreign body sensation was the main cause of postoperative discomfort in the transseptal suture group. Transseptal suturing might be a significantly comfortable, cost-effective and reliable alternative to nasal packing.

Randomized Controlled TrialThe effect of lidocaine, bupivacaine and ropivacaine in nasal packs on pain and hemorrhage after septoplasty.
We aimed to investigate the effects of local anesthetics soaked in Merocel nasal packs on hemorrhage and pain after septoplasty. The methodology includes a prospective double-blind study that was conducted in patients undergoing septoplasty because of nasal septal deviation. The study included 143 patients. ⋯ There was no statistically significant difference between the study groups in terms of postoperative hemorrhage. We concluded that bupivacaine use in nasal surgery provides better analgesia at least in the first 8 h period and does not cause more bleeding. Topical bupivacaine application to nasal packs should be considered after septoplasty.

Comparative study of complete nasal packing with and without airways.
To study and compare the effects of complete nasal packing and nasal packing with airways (uni/bilateral) on blood pressure, arterial oxygen saturation, middle ear pressure, and post-operative subjective complaints. ⋯ Nasal packing with an airway may help to reduce post operative morbidity and reduce the risk of hypoxemia.

The efficacy of pharyngeal packing during routine nasal surgery--a prospective randomised controlled study.
The efficacy of pharyngeal packing in the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in patients undergoing nasal surgery was evaluated in a prospective randomised controlled study. The effect of the presence of the pharyngeal pack on the incidence of postoperative sore throat was also assessed. ⋯ The absence of a pharyngeal pack was not associated with an increase in postoperative aspiration or vomiting. We conclude that the routine placement of pharyngeal packs during uncomplicated nasal surgery has no effect on the incidence of PONV and will increase the incidence of postoperative sore throat.
