Impact of laryngeal tube use on chest compression fraction during out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. A prospective alternate month study.
Supraglottic devices are thought to allow efficient ventilation and continuous chest compressions during cardiac arrest. Therefore, the use of supraglottic devices could increase the chest compression fraction (CCF), a critical determinant of patient survival. The aim of this study was to assess the CCF in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients ventilated with a supraglottic device. ⋯ The use of the LT during OHCA increases the CCF when compared to standard BVM ventilation. However, the impact of LT use on mortality remains unclear.

Adverse events associated with poor neurological outcome during targeted temperature management and advanced critical care after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
The aim of this study was to investigate the association of adverse events (AEs) during targeted temperature management (TTM) and other AEs and concomitant treatments during the advanced critical care period with poor neurological outcome at hospital discharge in adult out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients. ⋯ Cooling- and rewarming-related AEs were not associated with poor neurological outcome at hospital discharge. Sepsis, myoclonus, seizure, hypoglycemia within 72 hours and anticonvulsant use during the advanced critical care period were associated with poor neurological outcome at hospital discharge in our study.

Association between hospital post-resuscitative performance and clinical outcomes after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
Survival varies among those resuscitated from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). Evidence-based performance measures have been used to describe hospital quality of care in conditions such as acute coronary syndrome and major trauma. It remains unclear if adherence to performance measures is associated with better outcome in patients hospitalized after OHCA. ⋯ Greater survival and favorable neurologic status at discharge were associated with greater adherence to recommended hospital based post-resuscitative care guidelines. Consideration should be given to measuring, reporting and improving hospital adherence to guideline-based performance measures, which could improve outcomes following OHCA.

What is the outcome of cancer patients admitted to the ICU after cardiac arrest? Results from a multicenter study.
Low survival rate was previously described after cardiac arrest in cancer patients and may challenge the appropriateness of intensive care unit (ICU) admission after return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). Objectives of this study were to report outcome and characteristics of cancer patients admitted to the ICU after cardiac arrest. ⋯ Even if low, the 6-month survival rate of 14% observed in cancer patients admitted to the ICU after cardiac arrest and ROSC may support the admission of these patients to the ICU and may warrant an initial full-code ICU management.

Psychological impact on dispatched local lay rescuers performing bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
We studied the short-term psychological impact and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-related symptoms in lay rescuers performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) after a text message (TM)-alert for out-of-hospital-cardiac arrest, and assessed which factors contribute to a higher level of PTSD-related symptoms. ⋯ Lay rescuers alerted by text messages, do not show PTSD-related symptoms 4-6 weeks after performing bystander CPR, even if they perceive severe short-term psychological impact.
