Observational StudyNeuropathic pain following sagittal split ramus osteotomy of the mandible: prevalence, risk factors, and clinical course.
To estimate the prevalence of, risk factors for, and clinical course of neuropathic pain (NPP) after sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) of the mandible in a large cohort of patients. ⋯ NPP was an infrequent complication after SSRO, occurring in 1 of 238 patients in this cohort. The short duration and positive response to medication are reassuring findings. The results of this investigation highlight the need for prospective studies to further understand the spectrum of postoperative NPP.

Reduction of superior-lateral intact mandibular condyle dislocation with bone traction hook.
Lateral and superior-lateral dislocations of the intact condyle are a rare complication, following traumatic insult to the mandible. We report an unusual case of a 54-year-old male patient who experienced both types of dislocations of the intact condyles with symphysis fracture following a road-traffic accident. ⋯ The mouth opening was within normal limits, and favorable occlusion was confirmed one month postoperatively. To our knowledge, this is the first case of dislocation of both intact condyles--associated with symphysis fracture--being reduced with bone traction hook.

The synergy between endoscopic assistance and extraoral approach in subcondylar fracture repair: a report of 13 cases.
We aimed to present the primary experience of one surgeon with a new surgical technique performed on the first 13 cases and to evaluate outcomes following an extraoral endoscopic approach to subcondylar fractures. ⋯ An extraoral endoscopic approach for subcondylar fractures is feasible and can be carried out with decreased morbidity. This approach is recommended for those with limited experience in endoscopy to treat low laterally displaced subcondylar fractures as their initial cases.

Review Meta AnalysisInterventions for the management of mandibular fractures.
Fractures of the mandible (lower jaw) are a common occurrence and usually related to interpersonal violence or road traffic accidents. Mandibular fractures may be treated using open (surgical) and closed (non-surgical) techniques. Fracture sites are immobilized with intermaxillary fixation (IMF) or other external or internal devices (i.e. plates and screws) to allow bone healing. Various techniques have been used, however uncertainty exists with respect to the specific indications for each approach. ⋯ This review illustrates that there is currently inadequate evidence to support the effectiveness of a single approach in the management of mandibular fractures without condylar involvement. The lack of high quality evidence may be explained by clinical diversity, variability in assessment tools used and difficulty in grading outcomes with existing measurement tools. Until high level evidence is available, treatment decisions should continue to be based on the clinician's prior experience and the individual circumstances.

Re-evaluating the diagnostic accuracy of the tongue blade test: still useful as a screening tool for mandibular fractures?
Mandibular fractures are one of the most frequently seen injuries in trauma. In terms of facial trauma, mandible fractures constitute 40%-62% of all facial bone fractures. The tongue blade test (TBT) has been shown to be a sensitive screening tool when compared with plain films. However, recent studies have demonstrated that computed tomography (CT) scan is more sensitive for determining mandible fractures than the traditionally used plain films. ⋯ Based on the test characteristics calculated (negative predictive value 0.92, sensitivity 0.95, likelihood ratio -0.07), the TBT is a useful screening tool to determine the need for radiologic imaging.
