Coupling motions (CMs) are the motions occurring in different directions around the primary motion. As low back pain (LBP) is known to be associated with lumbar CMs, some studies measured lumbar CMs using the microelectromechanical system inertial measurement unit (MEMS-IMU) because of its low cost and small size. This study aimed to examine the reliability of lumbar CM measurements using the MEMS-IMU and to classify the individual characteristics of lumbar CMs. ⋯ Lumbar CM measurements obtained using the MEMS-IMU are reliable, and identifying the individual variations of lumbar CMs may be helpful for alleviating chronic or recurrent LBP.

To estimate the prevalence of inflammatory back pain (IBP) and axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) using the Assessment of SpondyloArthritis International Society (ASAS) classification criteria among employees in a university. ⋯ This is the first prevalence study of IBP and axSpA using ASAS classification criteria in the Turkish population. The prevalence estimates of IBP and axSpA reported here are within the upper range of other studies in European countries and the United States.

Incomplete resection of lumbar synovial cysts – Evaluating the risk of recurrence.
Synovial cysts are generally located in the lumbar spine adjacent to facet joints. Most studies recommend surgical resection. Adhesions of the lumbar synovial cyst to the dura are common and can result in dural tears with subsequent CSF fistula or nerve injury. The recurrence rate after incomplete resection of lumbar synovial cysts is unclear. For this purpose, we report on our experience of 148 patients who underwent synovial cyst resection from 2000 to 2011. ⋯ Only in case of severe adhesions to the dura complete resection was not enforced to avoid dural tears. In none of the 8 patients symptomatic recurrence of synovial cysts occurred. Aware of the limited numbers, we suggest rather leaving remnants of an attached synovial cyst behind after a sufficient decompression than risking dural tears and surgery-related complications. Nerve growth factor (NGF) expression and activity is important in chronic lower back pain but may also act as a pro-catabolic factor in the pathogenesis of intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration. Lipocalin 2 (Lcn2) expression in IVD was upregulated by NGF stimulation in our previous study. The current study was undertaken to identify potential mechanisms of the latter effect including potential interactions between Lcn2 and matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9). ⋯ NGF upregulates Lcn2 expression and increases MMP9 activity in AF cells; processes which are likely to potentiate degeneration of AF tissue in vivo. Anti-NGF treatment may have benefit for management of pain relief and slowing down progression of AF tissue degeneration.
