Periorbital burns are an infrequent but potentially devastating injury. This study aimed to elucidate the spectrum of such injuries presenting to a UK burns centre and the outcome achieved in the cases requiring periorbital reconstruction for the restoration of function and form. ⋯ The goal in management of periorbital burns is preservation of vision, prevention of future complications and restoration of an acceptable aesthetic outcome. Total visual loss is thankfully rare, but early ophthalmology intervention is vital given the evidence of corneal damage as a brief therapeutic window exists.

Effect of amniotic membrane on graft take in extremity burns.
Several studies have shown that the application of amniotic membrane as a biological dressing in the management of burns is accompanied by rapid re-epithelialisation and healing as it diminishes the oozing of plasma, bacterial count and fluid, protein and heat loss. This study evaluates the effect of amniotic membrane on graft take in split-thickness skin graft of extremity burns. ⋯ Our results show that although the amniotic membrane has no negative impact on graft take, it significantly reduces the duration of complete graft take, which is very important for both the patient and the health-care system.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of early amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) in patients with topical proparacaine-related toxic keratopathy. ⋯ Topical anesthetic abuse can lead to serious ocular complications. After proper diagnosis, the first step of treatment is the cessation of drug abuse. In addition to medical treatment, early AMT has an advantage of early pain relief and consequential elimination of the need for topical anesthetic instillation.

Effect of fresh human amniotic membrane dressing on graft take in patients with chronic burn wounds compared with conventional methods.
Burns are among the most devastating forms of injury. Nowadays the standard treatment for deep partial thickness and full-thickness burn is early excision and grafting, but this technique is not always feasible; and this leads to chronicity and microbial colonization of burn wounds. Interesting properties of human amniotic membrane made us use it in management of chronic infected burn wounds. ⋯ Our study showed that human amniotic membrane dressing significantly increases the success rate of graft take in chronic wounds, and it can be recommended as an important dressing in chronic burn wounds management, due to interesting anti-microbial, and better graft take effects.

Late trabeculectomy bleb leaks are a common complication after filtering glaucoma surgery. Although asymptomatic, late bleb leaks may lead to hypotony and are associated with bleb related infections. ⋯ Although a variety of treatments have been proposed for bleb leaks, there is no evidence of their comparative effectiveness.The evidence in this review was provided by a single trial that compared two surgical procedures (conjunctival advancement and amniotic membrane transplant). The trial did show a superiority of conjunctival advancement, which was regarded as standard treatment, to amniotic membrane transplantation. There is a need for more randomised trials to validate the findings of this single trial and provide more information on the different types of interventions, especially non-surgical treatments compared to surgical procedures. We recommend that any intervention should be compared to a standard procedure, which is to date conjunctival advancement.
