Low-dose clarithromycin (CAM) is widely used for the treatment of chronic respiratory infections. However, its anti-inflammatory mechanisms have not been fully explored. As CD4(+) T cells play an important role in the initiation of immune responses to infectious microorganisms, we aimed to investigate the effects of low-dose CAM on CD4(+) T-cell responses. ⋯ This study demonstrated a downregulation of Th1/Th17/naturally occurring Treg responses after treatment with low-dose CAM in mice with chronic P. aeruginosa lung infection.

The immunoregulatory role of CD4⁺ FoxP3⁺ CD25⁻ regulatory T cells in lungs of mice infected with Bordetella pertussis.
The identification of regulatory T (Treg) cells was originally based on CD25 expression; however, CD25 is also expressed by activated effector T cells. FoxP3 is a more definitive marker of Treg cells, and CD4(+) FoxP3(+) CD25(+) T cells are considered the dominant natural Treg (nTreg) population. It has been suggested that certain CD4(+) FoxP3(+) Treg cells do not express CD25. ⋯ Furthermore, CD4(+) FoxP3(+) CD25(-) IL-10(+) T cells were found in the lungs of mice at the peak of infection with B. pertussis. The rate of bacterial clearance was not affected by depletion of CD25(+) cells or in IL-10-deficient (IL-10(-/-) ) mice, but was compromised in CD25-depleted IL-10(-/-) mice. Our findings suggest that IL-10-producing CD4(+) FoxP3(+) CD25(-) T cells represent an important regulatory cell in the lung.

[Changes and the clinical significance of CD4⁺ CD25⁺ regulatory T cells and Th17 cells in peripheral blood of infants with respiratory syncytial virus bronchiolitis].
To observe the percentages of CD4(+);CD25(+); regulatory T cells (Tregs) and Th17 cells and the levels of IL-10, TGF-β and IL-17 in peripheral blood of infants with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) bronchiolitis. The relationship between above cells, cytokines and RSV bronchiolitis was determined. ⋯ The imbalance between Tregs and Th17 cells in peripheral blood of infants with RSV bronchiolitis may be one of the pathogenesis of RSV bronchiolitis.

Auditory stimulation of opera music induced prolongation of murine cardiac allograft survival and maintained generation of regulatory CD4+CD25+ cells.
Interactions between the immune response and brain functions such as olfactory, auditory, and visual sensations are likely. This study investigated the effect of sounds on alloimmune responses in a murine model of cardiac allograft transplantation. ⋯ Our findings indicate that exposure to opera music, such as La traviata, could affect such aspects of the peripheral immune response as generation of regulatory CD4+CD25+ cells and up-regulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines, resulting in prolonged allograft survival.
