The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between cartilage degeneration early after partial medial meniscectomy and abnormal alignment in the lower extremity. The subjects were 34 patients (37 knees) with medial meniscal tear who underwent arthroscopic partial meniscectomy. MRI was performed before and 6 months after surgery. ⋯ T2 values in articular cartilage of the femoral condyle increased earlier after meniscectomy with abnormal alignment in the lower extremity. Meniscectomy in cases with abnormal alignment may have a risk of early onset of osteoarthritis. Level of evidence: Level IV.

The abundance of inflammatory mediators in injured joint indicates innate immune reactions activated during temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA) progression. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) can mediate innate immune reaction. Herein, we aimed to investigate the expression profile and effect of TLR4 in the cartilage and subchondral bone of the discectomy-induced TMJOA mice. ⋯ Furthermore, TLR4 promotes the expression of MyD88/NFκB, pro-inflammatory and catabolic mediators in cartilage of discectomy-induced TMJOA. Besides, TLR4 participates in the production of MyD88/NFκB, pro-inflammatory and catabolic mediators in IL-1β-induced chondrocytes. TLR4 contributes to the damage of cartilage and subchondral bone in discectomy-induced TMJOA mice through activation of MyD88/NFκB and release of pro-inflammatory and catabolic mediators.

Patterns of cartilage loss and anterior cruciate ligament status in end-stage osteoarthritis of the knee.
This study aims to determine the proportion of patients with end-stage knee osteoarthritis (OA) possibly suitable for partial (PKA) or combined partial knee arthroplasty (CPKA) according to patterns of full-thickness cartilage loss and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) status. ⋯ ACL status can be reliably determined from a lateral radiograph using the location of maximal tibial bone loss. According to regions of cartilage loss and ACL status, two-thirds of patients with end-stage knee OA could potentially be treated with PKA or CPKA. Anatomic Risk Factors for Focal Cartilage Lesions in the Patella and Trochlea: A Case-Control Study.
Focal cartilage lesions in the patellofemoral (PF) joint are common. Several studies correlated PF risk factors with PF instability, anterior knee pain, and PF arthritis; however, there is a lack of evidence correlating those factors to PF focal cartilage lesions. ⋯ PF anatomic abnormalities are significantly more common in patients with full-thickness PF cartilage lesions. Trochlear dysplasia, patella alta, and excessive lateral patellar tilt are the most common correlated factors, especially in patellar lesions.

MicroRNA in osteoarthritis: physiopathology, diagnosis and therapeutic challenge.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most orthopedic condition. The pattern of gene expression and the transcription factors that exert control of chondrogenesis have been extensively studied. ⋯ miRNA could be useful for diagnostic or management purposes, but the issue of delivery of miRNA targeting agents needs to be overcome before miRNA can be applied in clinical practice.
