Amlodipine prevents monocrotaline-induced pulmonary arterial hypertension and prolongs survival in rats independent of blood pressure lowering.
1. The present study was designed to examine the role of amlodipine in preventing and reversing monocrotaline (MCT)-induced pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) in rats. 2. Rats were injected with MCT (40 mg/kg, s.c.) and randomly given either 6 mg/kg per day of amlodipine in drinking water or placebo for 3 weeks. ⋯ These effects were associated with marked inhibition of the downregulation of eNOS and improvement of pulmonary vascular endothelial activation, as well as anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative and antifibrotic effects in the lung tissue. However, amlodipine failed to reverse established PAH. This study may provide an insight into therapeutic strategy of amlodipine in PAH.

[Hyperbaric surgery and oxygen therapy in clostridial myonecrosis].
116 patients with verified clostridial myonecrosis were treated by means of a regimen of combined cyclic hyperbaric oxygenation at 3 ata and repeated necrectomy. With proximal localization of gas gangrene in the elbow or knee (n = 55) 34.5% of patients survived, whilst with peripheral localization at the limbs (n = 44) the survival rate was 88.6% amputation being avoided in 21 of these cases. Abdominal localization (n = 17) was associated with the lowest survival rate (23.5%). In spite of severe clostridial toxicity in 80.1% of patients at the time of admission, the overall mortality was 50.8%.

An outbreak of hepatitis A was observed in a shelter for the homeless in Vienna with about 200 inhabitants. Twenty-two cases occurred within a period of 6 months. ⋯ Nevertheless, 8 of these 102 "protected" persons showed signs of subclinical infection at subsequent follow up. Apart from these, 2 further cases of hepatitis A occurred among the non-immunised children at risk, whose parents had refused permission for serological investigation or immunoglobulin administration.

[Electrosurgical loop excision as diagnostic and simultaneously therapeutic intervention in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia].
109 women referred to our center for colposcopy because of suspicious cervical cytology and in whom an abnormal epithelial pattern was diagnosed on colposcopy, or in whom a discrepancy between cytology and colposcopy was encountered, concomitantly underwent loop electrosurgical excision procedure as an outpatient procedure. All removed specimens were examined and no invasive cancer was found in any of them. No serious complications occurred. Ambulatory loop electrosurgical excision procedure appears to be a cost-effective and well tolerated treatment modality for the management of women with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, with the advantage that this conservative procedure allows histologic examination of the removed tissue.

To determine the (HR-HPV) high risk HPV viral load in squamous intra-epithelial lesions and association with p16INK4a expression. ⋯ In this study although the HR-HPV viral load had shown a significant difference between p16 positive and negative cases, in HSIL cases this finding was not confirmed. New studies with a larger number of cases are necessary for consistent conclusions.
