Historically, wearing adornments on pierced body parts has been associated with many cultures as manifestations of religious or cultural identities. Currently, its use has a broad acceptance among young people. ⋯ This paper is a case report of a patient who had a complication from a piercing on the tongue located under the overlying mucosa. It also suggests a local habit was a possible initiator of this complication.

Correlates of compassion fatigue and burnout in chaplains and other clergy who responded to the September 11th attacks in New York City.
Participants at a June 2002 conference about the September 11th attacks were tested for compassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction, and burnout. The sample consisted of 343 clergy, including 97 chaplains. A total of 149 (43.4%) of the participants had responded as disaster-relief workers following the September 11th attacks. ⋯ Compassion fatigue also was positively related to the number of days that responders worked at Ground Zero, while disaster-relief work with the American Red Cross reduced compassion fatigue and burnout. Clinical Pastoral Education tended to decrease compassion fatigue and burnout and increase compassion satisfaction in both responders and non-responders. Burnout was inversely related to age in both groups.

Comparative Study[Analysis of clinical manifestations of hospitalized children infected with seasonal influenza A virus and 2009 novel influenza A (H1N1) virus in Beijing].
The novel influenza A (H1N1) virus firstly detected in April 2009 in Mexico rapidly spread to many countries including the United States and Canada where humans were infected with the H1N1 virus and deaths were reported. The pandemic virus strain had never been detected in specimen of human beings and swine. It was so highly contagious and widely spread that threatened life of humans globally. This study aimed to analyze clinical data of hospitalized children patients with 2009 novel H1N1 influenza A virus infection confirmed by etiologic tests, and compared with that of seasonal influenza A. ⋯ As a new variant of influenza virus A, 2009 novel H1N1 influenza A had stronger pathogenicity. Children with underlying medical conditions had the high risk to be infected and developed severe manifestations.

Case ReportsAirtraq® optical laryngoscope for tracheal intubation in a patient with giant lipoma at the nape: a case report.
Lipoma is a progressively increasing disease which may appear anywhere in the body. Its appearance at the back of the neck, especially when it is large enough to cause restriction of neck extension, poses challenges to anesthesiologists in airway management whenever needed. This paper evaluates the role of Airtraq® in restricted neck movement. ⋯ Airtraq® can be used for elective intubation in patients with restricted neck movements.

A technique for the extraperitoneal removal of the adrenal gland using laparoscopic instrumentation and insufflation is described. A case of Cushing's syndrome in a 42 year old female is presented with successful removal of her adrenal tumour using the laparoscopic method. This is the first report of laparoscopic adrenalectomy employing the extraperitoneal approach.
