Process and Impact of Development of an Adolescent Emergency Psychiatry Unit at a Large Urban Hospital.
Boarding of adolescent patients with mental health concerns requiring ongoing observation and treatment is of increasing concern across US emergency departments. The objective was a proof of concept of developing an adolescent psychiatric emergency unit and assessment of the impact of this unit on lengths of stay (LOS). ⋯ Creation of an adolescent psychiatric emergency unit without allotment of significant additional resources is an option to decrease pediatric emergency department boarding times for adolescent patients requiring ongoing emergent therapy for mental health concerns.

Adverse Events in Patients Aged 90 Days or Younger Receiving Ketamine in the Emergency Department.
The aim of this study was to identify the incidence of adverse events of ketamine administration in the pediatric emergency department in patients aged 90 days or younger in order to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of administration in this patient population. ⋯ In this study, 1 patient suffered an adverse event due to laryngospasm during intubation. In the pediatric population, the incidence of adverse events of ketamine administration has been found to be variable in the current literature, ranging from 0.71% to 7.26%. In our study, an adverse event occurred in 1 out of 14 administrations (7.1%). The incidence of adverse events associated with ketamine administration in our patients aged 90 days or less appeared to be similar to that reported in the general pediatric population.

Clinical Characteristics and Delayed Diagnosis of Pediatric Patients Presenting to the Emergency Department With a Newly Diagnosed Central Nervous System Tumor: A Single Institutional Experience.
Due to the varied symptomatology and inconsistent features on neurologic exam, central nervous system (CNS) tumors are difficult to diagnosis in a timely manner. ⋯ Our series highlights the complexity of symptomology and neurologic findings in children presenting to the ED with newly diagnosed CNS tumors who may have a normal neurologic examination. Standardization of symptom assessment and focused neurologic examinations may lead to earlier neuroimaging and prevent delayed diagnosis.
