Meta Analysis
Health-related quality of life in patients with conditions affecting the hand: meta-analysis.
Health state utility values provide the quality component of quality-adjusted life years and are essential for health economic analyses, such as the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence Technology Appraisal. The aims of this systematic review were to: catalogue utility values for health states experienced by patients with hand conditions; provide pooled utility estimates for common hand conditions; and determine how utilities have been estimated. ⋯ Pooled utility estimates for patients with untreated carpal tunnel syndrome and hand osteoarthritis are 11% and 18% lower than age-matched population norms respectively. Hand conditions have a significant detrimental impact on health-related quality of life and this study provides catalogued utility values for use in future economic analyses to support the delivery of value-based hand surgery.

Hepatic arterial infusion pump chemotherapy combined with systemic chemotherapy for borderline resectable and unresectable colorectal liver metastases: phase II feasibility study.
Hepatic arterial infusion pump chemotherapy combined with systemic chemotherapy (HAIP-SYS) for liver-only colorectal liver metastases (CRLMs) has shown promising results but has not been adopted worldwide. This study evaluated the feasibility of HAIP-SYS in the Netherlands. ⋯ HAIP-SYS for borderline resectable and unresectable CRLMs was feasible and safe in the Netherlands. This has led to a successive multicentre phase III randomized trial investigating oncological benefit (EUDRA-CT 2023-506194-35-00). Current trial registration number: clinicaltrials.gov (NCT04552093).

Machine perfusion is an organ preservation strategy used to improve function over simple storage in a cold environment. This article presents an updated systematic review and meta-analysis of machine perfusion in deceased donor kidneys. ⋯ Hypothermic machine perfusion reduces delayed graft function risks and normothermic approaches show promise.

Multicenter Study
Cachexia index for prognostication in surgical patients with locally advanced oesophageal or gastric cancer: multicentre cohort study.
Features of cancer cachexia adversely influence patient outcomes, yet few currently inform clinical decision-making. This study assessed the value of the cachexia index (CXI), a novel prognostic marker, in patients for whom neoadjuvant chemotherapy and surgery for oesophagogastric cancer is planned. ⋯ CXI is associated with disease progression, worse postoperative mortality, and overall survival, and could improve prognostication and decision-making in patients with locally advanced oesophagogastric cancer.

Liver regeneration after portal and hepatic vein embolization improves overall survival compared with portal vein embolization alone: mid-term survival analysis of the multicentre DRAGON 0 cohort.
The purpose of this study was to compare 3-year overall survival after simultaneous portal (PVE) and hepatic vein (HVE) embolization versus PVE alone in patients undergoing liver resection for primary and secondary cancers of the liver. ⋯ Overall survival after PVE/HVE is substantially longer than that after PVE alone in patients with primary and secondary liver tumours.
