Postoperative development of aortic insufficiency (AI) after implantation of left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) has recently been recognized, but the devices in the previous reports have been limited to the HeartMate I or II. The purposes of this study were to determine whether AI develops with other types of LVADs and to elucidate the factors associated with the development of AI. ⋯ AI, which is hemodynamically significant, develops after implantation of various types of LVADs. Physicians need to be more alert to the development of AI particularly with continuous flow devices.

The 2005 guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) have recommended that administration of atropine can be considered for non-shockable rhythm, but there are insufficient data in humans. ⋯ Administration of atropine had no long-term neurological benefit in adults with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest due to non-shockable rhythm. Atropine is not useful for adults with PEA.

Antioxidants effectively reduce ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury. The cardioprotective effects of luteolin, a flavonoid that exhibits antioxidant properties and is widely available in many fruits and vegetables, were examined in rats subjected to myocardial IR injury. ⋯ Luteolin is capable of protecting the myocardium against IR injury. The actions of luteolin are at least partly mediated through downregulation of NO production and its own antioxidant properties.

Cardiac angina is the hallmark of myocardial ischemia, but the role of the cardiac sensory nerve has received relatively little attention. Recently, both acid-sensing ion channel 3 (ASIC3) and capsaicin receptor (TRPV1) have been suggested as important mediators in sensing cardiac ischemia. However, studies comparing the physiological roles of ASIC3 and TRPV1 in the neuronal-cardiac sensing circuits in vivo are lacking. ⋯ An isoproterenol-induced cardiac ischemia model mimicking clinical conditions of early cardiac angina was used to demonstrate that ASIC3 but not TRPV1 plays a protective role in sensing cardiac ischemia.
