ReviewFacial expression and pain assessment in the pediatric patient: the primal face of pain.
This paper aims to explore the role of facial expression in pediatric pain assessment. A comparison of tools employing facial expression methodology is presented. The concept of the primal face of pain (PFP) is introduced. ⋯ The complexities of pain measurement should preclude the clinical application of untested instruments. For reported tools, a careful evaluation of the psychometric properties and the clinical context must precede application. The concept of the PFP warns against the application of facial pain scales as proxy measures in their intended population. Reliance on facial expression to assess pain in the school-age child is imprecise.

ReviewPosttraumatic stress symptoms in the pediatric intensive care unit.
Children who experience acute injury or illness severe enough to result in a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) stay are at risk for posttraumatic stress symptoms, as are their parents. A distinction is made between injury-related traumatic events, illness-related traumatic events, and treatment-related traumatic events, all of which contribute to this risk. ⋯ Children hospitalized in the PICU should be monitored for posttraumatic stress disorder during and after their stay. Risk and resiliency factors are a focus for practice and for future research.

Review Case ReportsMultidimensional assessment using the adolescent pediatric pain tool: a case report.
Children's and adolescents' pain experiences are complex and multidimensional. Therefore, assessing a single dimension of pain intensity is in many instances inadequate. The purpose of this case report is to illustrate the benefits of using a multidimensional pain tool to assess vaso-occlusive pain in children and adolescents with sickle cell disease. ⋯ The APPT is particularly valuable when clinicians encounter children and adolescents experiencing complex, difficult to manage pain.
