Infection with high-risk genotypes of human papillomavirus and cervical cytological findings among kidney transplant recipients in Kenya: a single centre experience.
High-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) infection is linked with uterine cervix premalignant lesions and invasive carcinoma of the uterine cervix. ⋯ The burden of hrHPV and abnormal cervical cytology in our study seemed lower than that reported elsewhere and even in general population. This study may form basis for further studies about HPV infections and carcinoma of the uterine cervix among the kidney allograft recipients in our setting.

Prevalence of extended spectrum Beta-Lactamase producing Klebsiella species from patients' specimens in a tertiary teaching hospital in Ile-Ife, Southwest Nigeria.
This study determined the prevalence of ESBL genes amongst Klebsiella species isolated from patients' specimens attending a Tertiary Teaching Hospital, in Ile-Ife, Southwest Nigeria. ⋯ The study establishes the prevalence of Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamase producing Klebsiella sp in the hospital and identified the most prevalent ESBL genes circulating as blaSHV followed by blaTEM and blaCTX-M in this environment. This underscores the need for regular and continuous surveillance of antimicrobial resistance trend as a strong component of the antibiotics stewardship and infection prevention and control programs in the hospital.

Characteristics, risk factors and outcomes of community-acquired acute kidney injury in the elderly: a prospective tertiary hospital study, Egypt.
Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) is a public health problem. Elderly present a greater predisposition to the development of AKI, either due to kidney senility, or due to high prevalence of comorbidities and polypharmacy. Considering the scarcity of studies on AKI in the elderly particularly in developing countries, this study emphasizes on the pattern and outcome of AKI in the Egyptian elderly. ⋯ In our locality; the elderly is highly vulnerable to AKI. Pre-renal causes principally dehydration represent the main triggers of AKI. Sepsis and hypertension contribute to mortality in this population. Preventive strategies are crucial not only in the hospital but also at home.

An evaluation of a peer supervision pilot project among community health workers in rural Uganda.
Living Goods operates a Community Health Worker (CHW) program in 19 districts of Uganda, where CHWs are supervised by full time Community Health Supervisors. This model is effective, but expensive. Evidence indicates that peer supervision can be a substitute and cheaper model for CHW supervision. We describe our experience and outcomes while implementing peer supervision among CHWs in Mayuge district. ⋯ Peer supervision is a feasible and more affordable model of supervising CHWs.

Prevalence and factors associated with Helicobacter Pylori infection among children with sickle cell anemia attending Mulago hospital, in Uganda.
Children with sickle cell anemia (SCA) have a high predisposition to a range of infections and gastrointestinal disorders. Studies of children living in low income countries have shown high levels of infection with Helicobacter Pylori (H. pylori), however, there are no reports in Ugandan children with SCA. ⋯ H. pylori infection was common among children with SCA and independently associated with epigastric pain but not recurrent abdominal pain. Pneumococcal vaccination and appetite loss were protective against the infection. Screening for H. pylori should be carried out in SCA children with epigastric pain.
