β-Cell dysfunction is associated with metabolic syndrome severity in adults.
Metabolic syndrome is prevalent in adults characterized by increased visceral adiposity and insulin resistance (IR). However, the link between pancreatic β-cell function and metabolic syndrome severity in adults across the glucose spectrum is unknown. We hypothesized that poor β-cell function would independently predict a higher metabolic syndrome Z-score (i.e., severity). ⋯ β-cell dysfunction is highly correlated with the severity of metabolic syndrome in adults. Future work is warranted to elucidate the mechanism by which cardiometabolic disturbances influence insulin secretion.

Review Meta AnalysisMetabolic syndrome in people suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Previous reports showed a high prevalence of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia among people suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, there is a lack of reviews that systematically analyze the relationship between PTSD and metabolic syndrome. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis aimed at estimating the association between PTSD and metabolic syndrome. ⋯ Despite some limitations, the findings of this systematic review and meta-analysis confirmed our hypothesis that individuals suffering from PTSD have a greater risk of metabolic syndrome. The potential role of unknown factors or mediators that might clarify the nature of this association needs further research.

Association between metabolic syndrome and carotid atherosclerosis: a community-based study in Hong Kong.
Carotid atherosclerosis should not be neglected as a cause for stroke in China, despite its low prevalence. This study was performed to evaluate the association between ultrasonographic markers for different stages of carotid atherosclerosis and metabolic syndrome. ⋯ Metabolic syndrome may be independently associated with the early stage but not the later and advanced stages of carotid atherosclerosis in community residents in China.

Association between the metabolic syndrome and its components with falls in community-dwelling older adults.
The metabolic syndrome and falls are both serious and common health problems in older adults. However, little is known about whether the metabolic syndrome contributes to falls. We investigated the relationship between the metabolic syndrome and its components with falls in community-dwelling older adults. ⋯ The metabolic syndrome is an independent risk factor for falls in community-dwelling older adults and should be addressed with regard to prevention of falls.

Independent impact of body mass index and metabolic syndrome on the risk of type 2 diabetes in Koreans.
Although obesity and metabolic syndrome have been associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), it is unclear whether obese or overweight people without metabolic syndrome are at increased risk for T2DM. ⋯ Overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome both are significant risk factors for development of T2DM in Koreans, and overweight or obesity without metabolic syndrome should not be considered a harmless condition. The lower BMI cutoffs for Asian populations can be useful in predicting risk of T2DM in Koreans.
