Comparative StudyComparing abilities of different lipid measures in diagnosis of insulin resistance: a Survey of Risk Factors of Non-Communicable Diseases (SuRFNCD-2007) study.
Dyslipidemia is a distinguishing characteristic of subjects with insulin resistance. Our aim was to determine the predictive abilities and appropriate cutoffs of different lipid variables for insulin resistance. ⋯ Among lipid measures, triglycerides and the triglycerides/HDL-C ratio have the highest predictive abilities for insulin resistance, and the diagnostic values of their appropriate cutoffs are similar to those of metabolic syndrome definitions.

Prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its relationship with clinically prevalent cardiovascular disease in the Veneto region, northeastern Italy.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is more frequent in adults with metabolic syndrome than in those without. We wished to assess the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome and the role of its specific components on prevalent CVD in a large cohort of subjects from the general population. ⋯ The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in the Veneto region among subjects ages 30-69 is high. There is a significant association between prevalent CVD and metabolic syndrome, but the biological basis of association is strongly influenced by gender.

Higher metabolic risk with National Institutes of Health versus Rotterdam diagnostic criteria for polycystic ovarian syndrome in Turkish women.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a heterogeneous disease with well-established metabolic abnormalities in women of reproductive age. There are various diagnostic criteria to define and establish PCOS. However, data conflict regarding the optimal diagnostic criteria for PCOS and its metabolic consequences. We have evaluated the clinical, endocrine, and metabolic features between main PCOS phenotypes according to different diagnostic criteria. ⋯ The NIH criteria identify women at high risk for insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. The Rotterdam criteria include women who have less severe metabolic implications.

Effects of Ramadan fasting on biochemical and hematological parameters and cytokines in healthy and obese individuals.
The typical nutritional plan in Ramadan may have beneficial influences on the inflammatory state, as well as on metabolic and anthropometric parameters. We aimed to investigate the effects of Ramadan fasting on biochemical and hematological parameters and cytokines in healthy and obese individuals. ⋯ Ramadan fasting has beneficial influences on the inflammatory state, as well as metabolic and anthropometric parameters.
